Ima edit in the info because my brain farted, but it's a cool short story I read back in the day in Asimov's science fiction magazine.

Edit 1: I'm not finding the damn thing in my files, and internet searches are so crap now that the results are useless, but I'll check on my pc in a bit and see if I can find it there. But first, a note. It's only one possum, he's just a one possum army of sorts

It was by Neal Barrett jr, and the title it's Ginny Sweethips' Flying Circus. I'm not sure if the story is in any of his published books or not, but the story exists on the various file sharing options, though you may have to dig, or find someone (wink wink) willing to send you the file via telegram
