Okay Lemmy, I wanna know if this is just a me thing or if anyone else has this experience.

Like the meme I don't generally remember my dreams for long after being awake. But! As I'm drifting off to sleep I start remembering things that feel like my previous dreams. Sometimes they seem to be dreams I had years ago.

Anyone else? Do you suppose I'm actually remembering recent or old dreams, or is this some kind of deja vu thing? Is there some separate memory space where all my dream memories are kept?

the brain is a hodgepodge of neurons evolved over a stupendous amount of time to deal with so many different things throughout the timeline of our ancestors, i think it's perfectly reasonable to just assume memories of dreams are left around in some neurons and when the same processes start before falling asleep the remaining parts of the memories just happen to get accessed again.

I kinda assumed that

Dreams usually make little sense - one can fly, punches don't work, you have no pants... because the parts of our brain that make reason and logic are sleeping.

We forget dreams because the waking brain can't make sense of them, so the thoughtsare discarded or ignored.

So, as your brain goes to the sleep state, the reality dissolves to dreamscape, allowing you to remember the nonsensical experiences.

eh i don't think most of that is true, pretty sure the dreams you remember are only the insane ones because you actually make an effort to remember them when you wake up.

To my knowledge dreams exist because our brains use the downtime of sleep to run simulations so we can practice stuff and sort of prepare for unexpected situations.

i think the reason we forget dreams is just because there's no point in keeping it around, the brain has already benefited from the dreams and it'd be unfortunate if we mistook a dream for reality and screwed something up because of that.

When drifting into sleep at night, I sometimes start remembering things from the dream I had last night. I personally think it has to do with getting into the same position in bed.

From time to time I feel like my dreams are a continuation of other dreams I've had in the past.

I can recall 2 or 3 different scenarios that somehow I keep dreaming about and it always feels like either a repeat or a continuation of the last time I dreamt about this scenario

The same characters show up and in the same environment etc

It's quite cool. I always wake up and feel like "woah this would be an amazing movie" except the one where I'm lost in an underground circus and the magicians and lions are trying to kill me. I sometimes relive the story of dreams I had years ago. I only wish I could remember more about them.

I don't know if there's a memory space for dreams but at least it seems like it's possible for the brain to fall into a similar state while sleeping and you feel like it was the same dream as before
