Technically a fossil is any remnant of an organism or its activities, not just petrified bones.

But they also said “the fossil”, not “a fossil”, so maybe they were talking about a specific fossil.

Of course it's company policy never to, imply ownership in the event of a dildo... always use the indefinite article "a" dildo, never "your" dildo.
