I heard (from Dan Carlan) that it was fun when the person being executed would call out to god and tell god they're going to be there soon, and really act out the part of a person going to heaven. But more and more people became non-believers and when they executed someone that just screamed and resisted it really took the enjoyment out of witnessing the execution. Executions ended soon after.
