You won’t get nuclear today. You’ll get nuclear in 20 years and hundreds of billions over budget.
Or you could today get green renewables and storage, and more of it with the money you’d save from not wasting it on a nuclear site.
Renewables are cheaper, quicker, and green.
We can, and must, do both. It isn't an either/or decision here, let's not frame it as that. That's right winger thinking. A mix of production the only way to ensure grid stability beyond. If we want to retire coal, stop building insane biomass, reduce gas usage, increase hydrogen production. Then we need nuclear. Storage isn't projecting to be anywhere close to enough, renewables in the UK are facing a tough challenge offshore currently - leasees are literally handing licenses back, onshore nimbyism is rife, solar installations aren't ramping up, our housing stock isn't being insulated at any measureable rate. We need to not only do stuff now and today, we also need that 20 year plan.
Politicians get lots of flack for short term politikalism, but energy security is one of the most important things governments around the world are involved in. Cheaper power is the foundation of our economy, and society. For any government to rule out green, dependable energy sources is akin to tying their feet together, sure you can still jump around - but wouldn't some room to manuever be nice?
