Know any underrated bands? (self.thrashmetal)
submitted 5 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) by serpineslair to c/thrashmetal

So I'm compiling a list of thrash bands to listen to, that I haven't already. When I listen to bands, I listen to studio albums and EPs in order of release, then move to the next. This way I can get a feel for how the band progresses over time. Just thought I'd mention that, as I think it is a handy tip for exploring new bands. Anyway, do you have any underground/relatively unheard of bands that you believe to be underrated and worth my time?

EDIT: I ended up pinning the post, as it may be useful to others. If you have any to share, feel free to add/update suggestions (don't worry about commenting on an old post).

Good luck trying to keep still listening to this song. Killer riff at 3:40.

Macabre : Grim Reality [ep] (1987) (murdermetal.bandcamp.com)

Macabre's first release always felt more thrash than death or grind to me.
Some might think differently. Great album anyway!

High energy Kolbotn thrash! Great album!

Hear the correlation between this and Merciless Onslaught - Metal Church?

Energetic, abrasive thrash. Plain and simple.

Crossover thrash with D.R.I.'s Kurt Brecht and some Dead Horse members!

Also fit for Halloween lists! ;)

Love their gritty sound.
The whole mini-album is Name Your Price to download, so even for free!

Die, my friend

Because this is the end

Make your final stand

And die with a beer in your hand!

Fan of the bass or no? While the bass might be a little too in your face, I think it's a welcome change to have it so high up in the mix.

A bit of background: every October I have a playlist of "Spooky" metal that I like to play, yknow, Halloween 'n' all. I'm always on the lookout for more to add, and I thought this could be a good discussion/opportunity to share some good music! It can include either Halloween-themed songs or songs with a genuinely creepy atmosphere.

Anyway, here's my contribution of a few songs (there's more where that came from, if you're interested):

  • Metal Church - The Dark
  • Municipal Waste - Grave Dive
  • Onslaught - Witch Hunt
  • Overkill - Burn You Down To Ashes
  • Overkill - Overkill II
  • Overkill - Overkill III
  • Overkill - Playing with Spiders/Skullkrusher
  • Slayer - Chemical Warfare
  • Slayer - At Dawn They Sleep
  • Slayer - Crypts of Eternity
  • Slayer - Tormentor
  • Sodom - Outbreak of Evil
  • Sodom - Blasphemer
  • Tankard - Zombie Attack
  • Venom (most of their early songs XD e.g. Don't Burn the Witch)

Not much to say on this one, just a solid, catchy example of bay area thrash.

A rare gem here for ya!

It's blackened thrash by an unheard of Colombian band. It's rough around the edges but has more than enough aggression and energy to make up for it! Tell me what you think!

Killer tone, killer chorus. Some new wave thrash for ya!

The recent Voivod post inspired me to post some more technical thrash. Here goes.

21

What subgenre do you think Goatwhore as a whole fits into? I believe it is mostly thrash: blackened death thrash?

22

Dutch thrash from their first album Malleus Maleficarum.
Became more death metal with the second album, and more prog from their third. First two are my favs.

23

More Canadian thrash/crossover. This is from their first album Dead Brain Cells. Lovely piece of intense music!
Their second album Universe went for a more technical sci-fi approach, with a Voivod vibe. But it didn't really work for me, I missed the older energy.
They are recording again, since 30 years, and it does sound promising!

24

Not pure thrash, but a universe in itself.
Their first album When The Kite String Pops, is mandatory listening for every extreme music fan!
From thrash to sludge to acoustic to groove, it's beyond styles.
Insanity as a musical style. One of the sickest albums out there. I simply call it swamp metal as it radiates damp, rotting, stinking heat.
Vocalist Dax Riggs is out of this world with his vocal range, I'm actually amazed he didn't just die from spitting his guts out!

Note on the video: it's an album track with some live footage patched to it. It doesn't fit exactly, so it feels a bit amateuristic. But it does convey the immense energy of Dax and the band!
