Here we go through the frequently asked questions If anyone has additions please write. Let's create a more complete guide together

What does it take to start smoking a pipe?

  • Pipe
  • Tamper
  • Lighter
  • Tobacco
  • Well as pipe cleaners for cleaning the pipe smoking.

This is the bare minimum to start enjoying

How often should I clean my pipe

After every smoke.

Do not disassemble your smoking pipe until it has cooled down, otherwise you may damage it.

Ok then which smoking pipe should I buy?

When you go to your local store or online store, you will see many pipe options. The cost of these smoking pipes will vary from a few dollars to infinity. As your first acquaintance, I would recommend an inexpensive smoking pipe - from the cob. This will be enough to get your first experience without spending a lot of money.

We have chosen a pipe, what kind of tobacco should I buy tobacco, you ask me

Going to your favorite internet search engine and typing "tobacco for beginners" will give you a lot of links. But the topic of tobacco is so deep that to describe it in this short FAQ, I will try to write a post in which I will try to convey information in a concise way about tobacco. But I would recommend taking 2 tobaccos, one with Virginia and the second one with Latakia (English blend). These are two tobaccos, they will not reveal the full spectrum of tobaccos to you, but it will be a very good starting point.

You can read more about tobacco in:

Lighter

You can use matches, zippo, etc. But do not use a turbo lighter, there is a chance that you will burn your pipe.

I bought too much tobacco how to store it?

Tobacco is sold in metal cans or in zip bags. In metal cans, provided that it is closed, storage problems should not arise. If it is open, tobacco can dry out. You can use something like a Mason can or ceramic. You will need a sealed jar with a liner, the liner can absorb the smell of tobacco, when you run out of tobacco, replace the lid.

My tobacco is dry, what should I do?

This is not a problem. There are several solutions to this problem. Coming soon

Pipe smoking is safer than cigars or cigarettes

No

Will smoking a pipe help me quit?

No

Out on business for the week and got me a smoking room.

SPC Plum Pudding '19 and States of Virginia by Sutliff.

Brought dedicated cobs, Ukrainian pear wood slut, Nording Compass slut, and Dunhill English.

My Virginia cob is my favorite pipe.

Do you distinguish between expensive and cheap pipes, pipes for working and pipes for relaxing? Are you afraid of potential damage or scratches to your nicer pipes, or are they a tool for a job that can and will show some wear?

Packing small pipe (self.pipesmoking)
submitted 1 year ago by BertusVulgaris to c/pipesmoking

I bought a Savinelli 109 a couple months ago. I love the smaller dimensions, the light weight and could clench it the whole day!

The issue I have is packing the pipe. The chimney is 17mm (.7") in diameter and 36mm (1.4") deep. I can never get it to smoke to the bottom, despite relighting all the time, and always toss out a good amount of unburnt tobacco at the end.

What could be the issue? Any tips for packing smaller pipes like this?

Didn't knew before, but Przemysl has a lot of tradition when it comes to pipe smoking. Highly recommend if you ever visit Poland. There's even a small pipe smoking festival early July every year.

Just loaded up this modified Missouri Meerschaum General for the first time, which I turned into a stubby nosewarmer. Going to work on the buffing a bit more and I'm waiting on a Vermont Freehand stem that will make this even shorter, but it's good to go for a spin now. Smoking some Accountant's Mixture.

Let's break down the topic of tube filters. This is not a topic of what is better or worse, write how you smoke, without relying on the opinions of other people. I will then add this post as a link to the FAQ.

Below is a brief information. There are several types of them:

  • Balsa
  • Activated charcoal
  • Paper
  • Meerschaum -Metal -Adapter
  • Unfiltered

There are several diameters from 3mm to 9 mm, each with its own pros and cons, which I hope to share with my own experience by users of our community.

Has anybody else here ever modded a corncob pipe? Just finished this Missouri Meerschaum General modification; I created a contrast stain by applying dye, sanding, and repeating several times. I then gave it two coats of shellac and buffed it with carnuba wax. I also shortened (albeit only slightly) the bowl and the wood stem before applying a silver ferrule and a forever stem.

The inaugural smoke is going to be C&D Pegasus.

What can you say about kiseru? Judging by the size, this is for a quick smoke break.

Shape pipe (self.pipesmoking)

Hi. What is your favorite pipe shape?

(@[email protected], let me know if you have a problem with posting links to vendors in here. Since this isn't Reddit, I figure it's fine as long as it isn't for self-promotion, but let me know and I'll remove it and/or just add search terms instead of linking directly.)

I prefer to buy at a brick & mortar store so I can support local businesses, but I haven't found one with much selection locally (yet). I'm in the metro Detroit area (Michigan, USA), and there is a local chain called "Wild Bill's Tobacco" that has a few Ashton blends that I like, but their selection is only around 10 blends total, half of which are bulk.

SmokingPipes.com has a very large selection, and I have already put in my second order there. I'm finding that I'm partial to Virgina blends, but it's still early days on my pipe journey, so I haven't purchased anything larger than 100g (3.5oz) yet.

Note that they also have a large selection of pipes there. I picked up one by Erik Nording for < $50 that I really like, though you can spend a LOT more. (They have a filter so you can filter out the really high-priced ones.)

Pipe pairing (self.pipesmoking)

What drinks or food do you choose? I can't tell what is my priority. But I like Latakia and Island Whiskey. Virginia is good with tea or Dr. Pepper.
