An abandoned community for the Philippines and all things Filipino! 🇵🇭

Started out as a Reddit alternative during the blackout from Jun 12-21, 2023 with over 1k members in just a few days. Fizzled faster than the "I Didn't Do It" kid after a month until it became the internet's Centralia in less than a year.

Gabriela Silang, born on this day in 1731, was a Filipina revolutionary who led a revolt against Spanish colonizers after her husband's assassination, vowing to avenge his death. The Spanish captured Gabriela, executing her at age 32.

Gabriela married Diego Silang, an Ilocano resistance leader, in 1757. Diego was imprisoned after he suggested to the Spanish authorities that they abolish the tribute, colonialist tax, and replace Spanish functionaries with native people. Together, Diego and Gabriela resisted colonial rule, engaging in skirmishes with Spanish troops.

Gabriela took over the reins of her husband's revolutionary movement after his assassination on May 28th, 1763. She led Ilocano rebels for four months before being captured and executed on September 20th that year by the colonial government of the Spanish East Indies. Spanish forces executed her later that year, at age 32.

"Her undaunted determination, along with her skill and strength is what the people of the Philippines will never forget, and why she is regarded as the pioneering female Bayani. Today her courageous leadership became a symbol for the importance of women in Filipino society, and their struggle for liberation during colonization."

- Margarita Mansalay

Hundreds rescued from love scam centre in the Philippines

Hundreds of people have been rescued from a scam centre in the Philippines that made them pose as lovers online.

Police said they raided the centre on Thursday and rescued 383 Filipinos, 202 Chinese and 73 other foreign nationals.

The centre, which is about 100km north of Manila, was masquerading as an online gambling firm, they said.

South East Asia has become a hub for scam centres where the scammers themselves are often entrapped and forced into criminal activity.

Young and tech-savvy victims are often lured into running these illegal operations, which range from money laundering and crypto fraud to so-called love scams. The latter are also known as "pig butchering" scams, named after the farming practice of fattening pigs before slaughtering them.

These typically start with the scammer adopting a fake identity to gain their victim's affection and trust - and then using the illusion of a romantic or intimate relationship to manipulate or steal from the victim. This often happens by persuading them to invest in fake schemes or businesses.

From the article: 'AllDone’s managers increasingly turned to the company’s digital assembly line in the Philippines, where contractors performed computational work that stood in for or supported software algorithms.

'AllDone had hired its first work-from-home Filipino contractor a few months after the company’s launch. Within a year, the team had grown to 125, and during my research it expanded to 200. Most contractors were college educated and between the ages of 20 and 40; about 70 percent were women. Executives often called these workers AllDone’s “human machine.”'

I just glanced at a newspaper in a coffee shop a few minutes ago. Apparently, the vessels left after their bullying was seen around the world.

What do you think about that?

The Philippines has seen a dramatic shift in foreign policy from the previous Rodrigo Duetrte administration to the current one led by Marcos. Under Duterte, Manila seemed to turn away from its treaty-ally Washington, while inching closer to Beijing.

The complete opposite is happening under Marcos’ watch. Ties with the US have warmed, particularly in the arena of security and defense. His administration, meanwhile, has made it a policy to “expose” China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea through its “transparency initiative.”

MANILA, Philippines — Regulating electric vehicles like bicycles and tricycles or e-bikes and e-trikes could worsen road congestion in Metro Manila, a group promoting mobility and active transport warned.

The recent decision of the local government units in Metro Manila and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to ban e-bikes and e-trikes along national highways and requiring users to secure driver’s license was “narrow thinking,” according to Roberto Siy Jr., co-convenor of Move as One Coalition.

“It will send the message that we should instead use cars,” he said in a report from News5.

Investing in private cars and motorcycles would “cause more traffic” compared to electric vehicles, which Siy maintained would be “more efficient, zero emission and less demanding in terms of road space.”

"Sa katotohanan, 'yung 'no return, no exchange' isa rin yan na ipinagbabawal ng DTI kasi karapatan ng consumer na pwede niyang ibalik 'yung item na nabili niya kapag ito ay depektibo. Kapag 'yung item ay depektibo, bukod sa ibalik yung item, may option din siya na humingi ng replacement o pwede rin siyang humingi ng full refund ng item na binili niya, pwede rin niyang ipa-repair," she said in a Super Radyo dzBB interview.

("No return, no exchange" is prohibited by the DTI because it is the consumer's right to return the item he or she bought if it is defective. When the item is defective, apart from returning it, the customer also has the option to ask for a replacement, or he or she can also ask for a full refund or have the item repaired.)
