Today we offer a very special Global Capitalism special in honor of “May Day”

Today's May Day Special, a collaborative effort with long-time contributor Charles Fabian, opens with the major causes for why May Day 2024 is so special. These include the fact that the great crash of global capitalism in 2008-2009 shook the world in ways that include shocking a declining US labor movement back to life and growth.

We saw that in 2011 when the Occupy Wall Street movement shook the US and beyond again. Then the "Fight for $15" swept across low-wage America as it still does. Then a socialist named Bernie Sanders rose to prominence and changed how millions of Americans viewed the economy and could see the need to vote for a direct challenge to capitalism. Nor did the pandemic slow down the growth of an anti-capitalist left that shows up these days as a 70% approval rating for unions in the Gallup poll and for hugely successful unionization drives in low-wage areas like Amazon and Starbucks, in auto plants in the US south, in militant new union leaderships elected in the Teamsters and the UAW.

May Day - the international celebration of the working class - has much to cheer for in 2024. And the international context is special too. The US-led, formerly dominant G7 no longer presides over world capitalism unchallenged. The BRICS - China and its allies - are a new alternative leadership of the world economy with a much more ambiguous relationship to capitalism. May Day 2024 welcomes nothing less than a new world economy and one far more favorable to working-class struggles than we have seen in years.

Green Party candidate Jill Stein recounts her arrest at pro-Gaza protest at Washington University in Missouri.

Short Summary:

  1. Jill Stein was arrested during a pro-Palestine protest at Washington University for refusing to leave after being asked multiple times.
  2. Stein tried to de-escalate the situation by speaking with university administrators, but the police assaulted her with a bicycle and charged her with assaulting a police officer.
  3. Stein believes the assaults on protesters reflect a disconnect between the government and the majority opinion of the American people who find the genocide in Palestine unacceptable.
  4. Stein discusses her presidential campaign, stating that the media has intentionally left her out of the mix, but recent events have brought attention to her campaign. Recent polling shows her at 8% overall and 22% among voters aged 30 and under.

Summary:

  1. The arrest and assault of Jill Stein during the pro-Palestine protest highlight the intense tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas war and the suppression of dissenting voices.
  2. The actions of the police and the government’s support for the assault on protesters raise concerns about the state of policing, free speech, and the use of force in the United States.
  3. The media’s lack of attention to Stein’s presidential campaign reflects a bias against third-party candidates and a desire to maintain a two-party dominance.
  4. Stein’s recent polling numbers in Wisconsin indicate growing support for her campaign, especially among younger voters who are dissatisfied with Joe Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza.

  2. China has become the manufacturing center for the whole world and a crucial player in global trade.
  3. China’s unique blend of state and private sector enterprises has allowed for rapid industrialization and technological advancements.
  4. The Chinese Communist Party plays a dominant role in politics and aims to overcome uneven development while building alliances with other nations.
  5. China’s future could lead to either becoming a new hegemonic empire or fostering a collective global community of nations.

Summary

  1. China’s economic growth and development over the past 70 years is a testament to their remarkable achievements in raising people out of poverty and becoming a global economic powerhouse
  2. China’s unique economic model, with a blend of state and private sector enterprises, has allowed for rapid industrialization and technological advancements. This model challenges traditional notions of socialism and capitalism.
  3. China’s dominance in manufacturing and global trade has transformed it into a crucial player in the world economy. This has led to increased competition with the United States and other Western countries.
  4. The Chinese Communist Party’s political dominance and focus on overcoming uneven development demonstrate their commitment to creating a more equitable society. However, this dominance also raises concerns about political freedom and human rights.
  5. China’s future trajectory will have significant implications for the global order. It could either lead to the rise of a new hegemonic empire or the emergence of a collective global community of nations. The outcome will shape the geopolitical landscape in the coming years.
