Lovecraft Mythos - Cosmic Horror

H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos is a shared universe far larger and more terrifying than that of humanity, where ancient, malevolent beings known as the Great Old Ones slumber in the depths of space or time. After Lovecraft's death, the Mythos has been expanded and developed by many authors, including August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard. These and many other authors have helped to flesh out the Mythos into a rich and complex Dark Universe.

The origin and "core" of the Mythos start of course with the collection 23 of Lovecraft’s greatest weird tales. In these stories, monstrous entities traverse the gulfs of time and space and humankind cowers in fright at the havoc they wreak.

So I'm sure just about everyone knows "The Cool S". It's ubiquitous in school culture and if you haven't drawn it, you probably know someone who has.

The thing is, no one knows where it came from. Everyone has a cool cousin or older sibling that "invented" it, or claim it's from some group or company, but it always turns up to be false. In fact, the oldest known example is in a book cataloging street art published in 1973. From there it's been found on basically every notebook and lunch table the world over and represents a big niche in childlore.

So here's where I go off the deep end... What if this is actually The Yellow Sign?

The yellow sign is never expressly described in the story, with the weird wiggly one being an artist rendition. However, in The King in Yellow, a character draws it freehand to show someone. Which implies it's easy to freehand which the current one isn't. Furthermore, think of the purpose. The yellow sign is intends to spread Hasturs influence secretly. The current one, while undoubtedly cool, is also strange and stands out. If you're wearing it on your person, it stands out. The S doesn't. I'm writing this on break and there's 3 in this room alone. No one cares.

Now take a moment to consider the vector. The best time to indoctrinate someone is young. Why fight to catch the random mad reader when you can net up whole classrooms in a single day and whole schools in a week? No one takes it seriously because it's a children's doodle. A thing we draw absent-minded as we remember our youth.

For all we know, we're all infected and didn't even know.

Michael Whelan’s longcover for At the Mountains of Madness, commissioned by Centipede Press for the classic horror novel by H.P. Lovecraft.

Whelan's artwork has been featured on numerous covers of Lovecraft's reissued works, particularly through Del Rey Books. His paintings for LOVECRAFT'S NIGHTMARE were instrumental in revitalizing interest in Lovecraft’s stories during the 1980s and have since become iconic within both literary and music circles, even appearing on heavy metal album covers

According to the Eltdown Shards, a Yekubian cube lands on a planet near the Milky Way Galaxy's rim about 2 trillion years ago. This may seem wrong since the universe is created in the Big Bang, around 13.8 billion years ago. According to some, Azathoth may be responsible for this. The Cthulhu mythos is a combination of many books written by many different authors aside from the great H.P Lovecraft himself. As by his wishes, he left the Cthulhu universe as an open book for competent writers to fill in the gaps and expand the franchise. This timeline is based on canonical books, like the timeline of the Cthulhu mythos, the challenge from beyond by Moore, where Yidhra walks by De Bill just to name a few. In this video, we shall only showcase the most important events in the timeline, especially the ones that date back millions or billions of years ago and which also is proposed to extent millions and billions of years in the future. Modern human interaction or birthdates are omitted as it will be too confusing taking into account the variety of books and works by many authors.

A new thriller from Mad Cave Studios this March will delve into a world of "ancient conspiracies, monstrous horrors, and the ultimate fight for truth." Dark Pyramid is a five-issue limited series from the creative team of Eisner Award-winning writer Paul Tobin and 2000 AD artist P.J. Holden.

"Hooky Hidalgo, adventurist and popular live streamer, has gone missing while climbing Mt. Denali in Alaska!" reads the synopsis for the first issue. "When his girlfriend, Becca, arrives at the base of the mountain to retrace his steps, she soon discovers something beyond the dreamy and impressive landscape. There's a conspiracy deep within the heart of Denali itself – a dark pyramid, silent, waiting. Becca – and the scores of Hooky fans determined to either find him or find some fun – will face death, avalanches... and monsters to find the truth."

https://fictionhorizon.com/15-most-terrifying-lovecraftian-monsters/

American author Howard Phillips Lovecraft is now considered as a pioneer of modern horror fiction. Although controversial, Lovecraft was a seminal horror author and has influenced and inspired many horror-centered artists, be they writers, filmmakers, musicians or painters.

Lovecraft’s stories are usually quite weird and he was a master at portraying the terrifying atmosphere present in his works, an atmosphere that would suck you inside the pages so vividly that it would seem as if you were there yourselves. His style is quite recognizable and although at times repetitive, it is still one of the most unique and specific writing styles in the history of horror literature.

As for his work, his stories are so specific that he has become an eponym. The term Lovecraftian horror defies a whole subgenre (or style) of horror literature inspired by the tales of H.P. Lovecraft. He is also considered to be the “father” of the cosmic horror subgenre, also often-present in his works. His horror stories are divided into two major cycles – the Dream Cycle (about the fictional “Dreamlands”) and the Cthulhu Mythos (about a vast mythology of titanic monsters) – both of which feature a colorful pandemonium that has been terrifying readers for over a century now.

In today’s article, we have decided to visit that pandemonium and to give you a list of the 15 most terrifying Lovecraftian monsters, as they have appeared in his stories, but also stories written by other Lovecraftian authors. Read this with your lights on and enjoy the creepiness of Lovecraft’s pandemonium!
