Typhoon 8 was hoisted for most of the day but HK is basically unscathed.

Next week though according to windy.com a strong typhoon will directly impact the city. By Wednesday it will be awfully close to HK.

... Another day off for some of us?

There are quite a few resources available for learning spoken Cantonese but i've found it difficult to find resources to learn Cantonese grammar.

For example, the sentence "he asked me to send you some photos" is, in my opinion, not a difficult sentence to translate in many languages but it seems particularly difficult in cantonese:

佢叫我 send的畫比你 keui yiu ngoh send dik waak bei nei he + ask + I + send + of + photo + ? + you

I have found this is called the "passive voice" but i don't understand the sentence order or why/where this "bei" is used. I learnt that "bei" means "by" so i don't understand why it's used here.

Does anyone have any good resources for learning cantonese grammar, especially making sentences?

Planning a day trip for 1 July. I've already been to Lamma Island and Lantau Island, although I could revisit them I suppose. Was thinking of doing a day trip to Tung Ping Chau or maybe Sai Kung, open to other recommendations. I"ll be travelling by myself. Alternatively i'd like to see a museum or fort. Thanks!

Taiwan residents have been warned against “accidentally stepping into a minefield” and being arrested under Hong Kong’s national security law while travelling to the city by the self-ruled island’s authorities. The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) of Taiwan recently updated a section on its website dedicated to Hong Kong’s national security law, informing people of behaviours […]

I'm not very tech savy. Is there a way to upload these videos somewhere here on the server so they would not be removed again?

My top dim sum place is Sun Hing, i could live there.

For individual foods, I like the pineapple bun and a dessert I had that was like cheung fan with mango inside and coconut on top, don't know the name.

As i said on my earlier post, i'll be visiting HK soon; I used to live here a long time ago. When i first came, I bought an adaptor (for electronics charging) from some guy near HKU for $1, he had them all in a box near the door, but I can't remember the place now. I can't remember how I loaded up my sim card either - I will just be in town for a week but I'll be working so my main thing is that i'll need quite a bit of data and maybe make some local phone calls.

Anyone have recommendations where to buy an adaptor and how to load up a sim card? Thank you!

I have found at least 4 ‘Hong Kong’ communities hosted at different Lemmy instances.

I think the key is to educate and spread the info so eventually one of these instances will become the most dominant, and users will eventually have the knowledge to all migrate to it.

So please help as much as possible to help spread the word:

  1. Use https://browse.feddit.de/ to do subreddit community search - this will allow you to search across the board, showing all communities across all instances that match the search criteria.

  2. Pick the one with the most subscribers and subscribe to that community by doing this: copy the URL of the community you will subscribe to with the copy icon next to the community in search results, go back to your own lemmy instance, login, then click on the magnifying glass icon to initiate a search, then paste the copied URL. Wait for a few seconds for communications to happen, and you will see the community listed in the search result. Now click on it, then subscribe.

Hopefully we won’t end up in an chaotic situation where there are multiple and totally separate Hong Kong communities.

Hint - after you use the magnifying glass icon and paste the URL, it will very likely say ‘No Result’ while in the background it continues to reach out to the remote instance. Keep waiting for maybe a minute or so at the most, and the remote community will be shown.

NOTE: The https://lemmygrad.ml/c/hongkong community seems to be very pro-Beijing, although it also seems currently it has the most number of subscribers according to the Lemmy Community-Browser.

How is the cost of living in Hongkong these days? I'll be visiting later this summer and wondering how much cash to bring. Accomodation is paid for so would need money for food, transportation, and any visits for museums. I've been to HK before so have done most of the touristy things already. Thanks!
