So an interesting change is coming to Mastodon embeds.

Previously, the embed code consisted of an iframe, going forward, this is being switched to a blockquote.

In either case, the original text of the post is not included and is rather added after the main page the embed is on is loaded.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to migrate your data as well when you need/want to move to new servers in the #fediverse? @[email protected] is leading a lot of work creating a spec towards that: https://swicg.github.io/activitypub-data-portability/lola.html

This is the project I told you about in our #FediForum conversation! ;)

Mastodon launches a new project that will "[explore] decentralized search and discovery for the Fediverse".

And it's all very privacy-conscious, which is nice!

@[email protected]: "Shaming people into moving over (to the Fediverse) doesn’t work".

Well said. And I've said this myself in the past, folks who want to get people to join the fediverse have to actively work towards making it a safe and inviting space, for everyone.

A small compendium of the Fediverse platforms I use/know well.

In the past few days, I revisited some of my old Fediverse instances since some friends asked me to help them set up a new one. I also took the chance to perform maintenance on some leftover instances. Here's my experience:

Akkoma: My oldest instance still running, opened in 2022. It was offline for a few months (3/4). I updated everything to the latest version and restarted it. I’m not sure why, but it’s extremely slow, with a heavy load on Postgres and many queries just to open the main page. I like Akkoma - I'll investigate further.

GoToSocial: I updated a friend's instance - GoToSocial itself was up-to-date, but the underlying system wasn’t. I noticed that once it exceeds 2000 followings, it becomes a bit slow. The database is PostgreSQL, but that's not the issue. The GoToSocial process becomes somewhat heavy on the VPS. Still, it's very usable and a software with great potential, in my opinion. The Mastodon API is implemented quite well and works with the major software.

Mitra: It seems well-built. The person had around 1000 followers and followings on a Mastodon account, which they moved from a large instance. No speed issues, though sending a message makes the server “heavy” for a bit, but it’s temporary. The Mastodon API is partially implemented, but the software is advancing quickly, and I find its native interface quite pleasant.

Snac2: I've always had a soft spot for Snac2. The lack of a database and some design choices make it an excellent solution for small instances. For example, sending posts to all known instances increases visibility and interaction. Its basic, JavaScript-free interface is very clear, though it might not be the best for those used to Mastodon. But the Mastodon API is improving version by version, and I think the developer is doing an excellent job. It struggles a bit with larger numbers, but that's due to the underlying file system, not the software itself. If "move" support (both in and out) were added, I would recommend it to anyone starting self-hosting for single-user or small community instances because "move" is one of the options that gives the most freedom in Fediverse software.

Mastodon: My “old” personal instance was stuck at version 4.1.x and had been offline for a few months. I updated the FreeBSD Jail and upgraded Mastodon to 4.2.12 and then to 4.3.0-beta1. No issues. I also helped a friend (who had an old Pleroma-based instance they barely used) migrate. This user has around 5000 followers and followings - Mastodon is running on FreeBSD on a VPS (arm64) for just over 3 euros a month, with no significant issues (apart from media storage, but that's not Mastodon’s fault). Mastodon is sometimes said to be heavy, and that's partly true, but its modularity ensures that even in cases of overload, queues may slow down, but navigation and the local timeline remain reasonably fast. I think this is a good thing for any larger-scale use of an instance.

In short, I think things are moving in the right direction, and the software is evolving nicely. Well done, devs!

As a single user instance, I'm glad to see something slighly positive from Mastodon finally.

Still no word on better moderation tools for small instances, though.

Maybe someday.

How the whole "open communication across platforms" is going...🤦‍♂️😩

Seriously, stop blaming the network/platform/software/protocol if you are not seeing the content you want to see, or seeing content you don't want to see.

Every #SNS, or #SocialMedia network, is based on (1) who you follow; and (2) who you and the people you follow interact with.

In other words, what you see and don't see was based on your how you're growing your own network. That is your personal "observable network".

It gets worse in platforms with algorithms because they push far more similar content you wouldn't normally see if you don't have any connection path to those (again, who the people you're following are interacting with).

In platforms without an algorithm, like most #Fediverse software, the closest you can get to something similar is your "Instance timeline/feed" and "Fediverse timeline/feed", which are generally 'hidden' behind another tab/section. Not like in, for example, #Threads, "For You" is the default. ("For You" is currently like the "Instance timeline/feed" but with algorithms.)

If you're seeing too much tech mumbo jumbo, you're probably following a couple of tech accounts. Or, maybe, you're just following one techie account but they're far too active in this type of content.

You want to see more art content, you have to find and follow them. Use hashtags and see who else are using it and follow those accounts you like. Or, if you like things being fed to you through an algorithm, you have to keep feeding that algorithm with keywords so it will learn what you want (again, like in Threads).

What you see and don't see is based on how you're growing your network. It's no different from your offline life, you see and hear only the things people that surrounds you are sharing.

It is not the fault of the software/platform/protocol/instance/algorithm (or lack thereof). It's all about #YOU, you are center of your "observable network". Just like how planet Earth is the center of its own "observable universe".

I'm making short videos for @[email protected] about people's a-ha 💡 moment when it comes to the indie web. So far I have:

✨ @[email protected] talking about how he was able to keep up with updates at a festival despite people posting to different platforms

✨ @[email protected] on how it's helping keep (Welsh) language and culture alive

✨ @[email protected] about how it's benefitting small publishers and bringing new life to his site

✨ @_[email protected] on the magic of interoperability and seamlessly syncing comments (aka the future is already here)

There are so many cool stories out there and I want to hear yours! Once we get 10, we'll start to share them all.

A recent Elon Musk post....

“women and low T men” are not able to think freely because they “can’t defend themselves physically”. The only people who can think freely are “high T alpha males and aneurotypical people ... this is why a Republic of high status males is best for decision making."

I know this is how the #fediverse is supposed to work, but it's still pretty sweet to see it in action.

A post I made on Mastodon showing up on https://beehaw.org/post/15964400.

Saddened to find out today that apparently #Cohost, an indie nonprofit blogging site that was popular among artists, is shutting down. There was a lot of good content on there, and I know how it feels to see the place that you've been posting your thoughts and art for what could have been years suddenly evaporate, and for some people, I know it's just as they've been getting established there.

A shut down like this hurts everyone.

If anyone is coming over from co-host, or any other site that is going down, or a country like #Brasil / #Brazil that has banned your previous #SocialNetwork, or just needs help getting established on here in general, feel free to reach out to me. I am always an open volunteer for expanding the #Fediverse.

I also encourage anyone who has a Cohost account to go post on there to try and help the users find their way here.

We have until the end of the month to get them all over here!

When discussing BlueSky, it's not entirely correct to say that "everyone is on the same server".

I used to think the same way.

However, I've been informed over time, by very knowledgeable people that it's more complicated than that.

If you're knowledgeable about Fediverse and how the protocol works and are interested in a comparison, I posted a detailed explanation of my understanding of how BlueSky works and what I believe are it's shortcomings here:

Oh wow, somehow I only got 41% of the questions right in this fediverse quiz @[email protected] made/shared (?) to celebrate the fediverse turning 14 back in 2022.

Well, time to brush up on some fediverse trivia, especially mascots!

Did you know that Pleroma, a Fediverse software, has the option to make "followers only" posts that reach their instance, public on their instance if they choose?

They can also automatically deny deletion requests if they want.

It's always important to remember that there's very little privacy on the internet. If you post something, even if it may seem private, always has several ways of going public and existing forever.

Pretty much everything on the internet is public and will not be deleted on request.

Screenshots and internet archive also exist.

If you don't want your post to be seen by most people, don't post it.

You are not safe just because the software or platform you're using says you are.

Just seen someone unironically call Fediverse, "The Mastodon Network".

I don't have the energy to correct them anymore.

I, for one, refuse to bow to Mastodon overlords.

To each their own though.😑

As much as I try to stay away from AI, I think some functionalities in the #Fediverse can and should be automated.

Like detecting a post's language? I keep forgetting to tag my posts the correct language, and apparently others too. Language filters don't work as a result. I think posts should be able to be auto-tagged based on a detected language.

I'm doing some tests with @[email protected] - one of the things I really like is that it retrieves all the messages in a thread, so you don't run the risk, as often happens on #Mastodon, of only seeing part of the replies. There's also a button, 'Load Replies,' that handles this in case anything is missing.
It seems like a good approach to me.

Just about to watch @[email protected]'s recent video on the Fediverse!

I'm sure it'll be good. He's very knowledgeable in this space.

He was and still is one of my first friends here and I'm glad to have him a part of my Fediverse experience.

Instead of using the Asterism to represent the Fediverse, which introduces a style set completely different from the original, I would like to propose ⚝ instead. #fediverse #logo #logofediverso
