Hey community,

Just found this community earlier today and need some help. Last week i purchased this tank (starter kit that came with everything) for a good price and wanted to get back into aquariums. After filling up the tank with water and letting it "cycle", thought it would be a good time to add some fish.

I was handed some test stripes from a local shop and when tested, it seemed to pass all the tests. Last night i bought 8 fish (4 neon tetras, 2 Red-gold guppies and 2 algee eaters). Things seemed to be fine until i checked on them this morning.

All of the neon tetras had died. 2 of them were floating and two of them havent been counted for. As i prepare the decreased ones a proper burial at the upstairs bathroom, I wanted to reach out to the community and see what i did wrong, how to improve to sustain a healthy environment for them.

Please let me know any recommendations, clearly the information here isnt enough, so i can update the information when needed.

Thanks,

Is this just algae? (lemmy.world)

I'm about to rescape our shrimp tank (sorry if it's hard to see, ripped up a bunch of crypts and made quite a mess) and for months there's been a mostly self-contained area covered in what looks like really fluffy brown algae.

I let it grow for awhile because it grew very slowly and the shrimp loved to pick around in it, any ideas if it's just a type of algae? It started to spread to another rock recently but otherwise has not spread out of control.

I kind of want to keep a patch of It in the new setup if possible, anyone able to ID it?

I was trying to go natural, I didn't really have a plan just stuck in what I thought looked nice. Not as nice as most of yours but I love it. I was having a hard time getting a good picture though since there is light coming in from the windows.

Low tech and perfectly balanced. I have 10 rummies, a handful of male guppies that will be moved to my new tank when I set it up, an unknown number of pygmy cories, and a juvenile bristle-nose pleco.

Lil 10 gallon tank, fake plants because I don't have the mental bandwidth for live plants at this point in time. I need to learn more tricks for tank photography.

I think I will end up removing some of the sand at the sides eventually, I liked it better with the sand just in the center.

Finished adding fish to our 75 gallon planted tank (turned down the lighting for a better photo). I'll post new photos once things start growing in.

New betta in our new 9 gallon fluval flex. Hopefully he does well with the wild-type shrimp I plan on adding.

I decided to take this weekend to tear down and rescape my 20 long, which got me looking back through some pictures of when it was in top form.

I'm planning on going with a Reverse island (?) or valley type layout this time around.

Its been 9 years since I tore it down and exited the hobby but I still enjoy looking at other people's builds and planning for when I can get back. So posting it here to help boost reef content on Lemmy, in hopes more will join in!

This is the first tank that got me back into fishkeeping as an adult. It has been running for two and a half years with various plants coming and going. There must be like 8 swords in here that I've grown from one mother plant. The thing has produced at least 20 decently sized swords that you'd see at the store.

I really like this tank and I look at it all day since it's next to my wfh desk. Super fun to trim and play with the plants. I like to propagate and juice plants in here to move to my other tanks. Right now I am farming pearlweed.

Equipment

  • 2x Hygger 36 inch programmable lights
  • CO2Art CO2 regulator (I wanted this to be a Dutch style tank but that never worked and the tank has been running fine with the CO2 so I haven't turned it off.)
  • Penn Plax Cascade 1000 canister
  • Fluval M200 heater

Stocking

  • 12 cherry barbs
  • 12 Dwarf praecox rainbows
  • Apistogramma macmasteri pair
  • A few pygmy corydoras (I had ich earlier this year and unfortunately I don't think many made it. I had 9.)
  • L129 Colombian zebra pleco
  • Two Amano shrimp
  • Two Japanese trapdoor snails
  • One pagoda snail
  • One rabbit snail

This colony is about 10 months old and started from a pair in a 10 gallon. The pair were really skittish in the 10 and did not breed very well even when coaxed with gobs of live baby brine. Got two spawns and only two fish survived from each.

I moved them to the 20 long after 4 months and they are much more prolific and the spawns are having better success. There is a spawn from the main pair about once every month and a half and about 10 fry survive (or are born) with just live baby brine and crushed flake being fed.

These fish exhibit super awesome behavior and are hardy. The whole colony survived my dumb ass creating a nitrate spike for around two weeks while the filter was clogged with duckweed and hardly flowing.

Hi everyone! I have a 40 gallon breeder planted tank. Currently it has cardinal tetra, rummy nose tetra, peppered cordyora, a honey gourami, and innumerable blue cherry shrimp. There is tons of driftwood in the tank, and I think a pleco would fit in well. I'm kind of overwhelmed by all the different subspecies and varieties, wondered if anyone had some (smaller) plecos they've particularly liked and would recommend. And also best places to order them online, unfortunately our main lfs in the area closed and so it's pretty much down to petsmart and petco for local choices.

Hey folks! Just sharing my new aquarium - it's a 20 gallon long, planted with Java Fern, Java Moss, and Rotala rotundifolia. It took me about 3 weeks to get it cycled, but I now have it stocked with a small school of Panda Cory and Guppies. I'll probably add a few more, but wanted to start there.

Guppies: ( 6)

Cory (6):

About one week into this new 40 gallon breeder with a Father Fish style dirted deep substrate. For better or (probably) worse I didn't boil the wood and am dosing ammonia instead of cycling fish in. Definitely experiencing a bacterial bloom but intend to wait it out. I did have roughly one day of ammonia overdose which is almost certainly contributing to some issues with the plants but got that in check so 🤞 hopefully all of the plants pull through! I did add some water and material from an older 10 gallon tank. In hindsight, I probably should have passed on the ammonia and thrown in a guppy.

Had a great deal of fun with my Walstad

Earlier photo

Current look, some plants moved over to the left, some of the “bamboo” removed since it just lost all leaves and turned into sticks with a crown of leaves sticking out of the water (Bamboo? whatever the heck it was, just called Bamboo by the store, I have issues buying plants since we are a bit remote)

Definitely wouldn’t get the Swordtails for the next tank, I just wanted something orange to offset nicely against the green, but they pop out babies every few minutes it seems. I only started with 4 or 5
