It gunks up the internals of the machine and doesn't actually do what's advertised. You're better off with a dryer sheet if you're concerned about static.

Wash in cold water, don't use a lot of detergent, never use fabric softener, and run your loads with an extra rinse. It's largely unnecessary to separate by color. Personal preference, I like to add laundry sanitizer as it gives my clothes a pleasant smell.

Also, if you have onsite laundry at your house, fold and put it away as soon as a load is finished in the dryer. Makes the whole process a lot easier than just folding and putting away a huge load at the end.
