Just had a great suggestion from @[email protected] - how about we start a "book club" but for alternative albums! Apparently our friends over at HipHopHeads has started one. I think that sounds splendid!

As [email protected] wrote: "Next week I will start the thread. Every week will be a different album and anybody who is interested can give it a listen, then share their opinions in the weekly thread!"

Sound good?

YOUR ALBUM ASSIGNMENT: REM - Automatic For The People

The band that is our community header that kicked off a 1000 alternative bands of their own. After taking college rock and literally kick starting the "authenticity" alternative music boom of the 90s, REM returned with this brooding dark album.

First thread will be next week!

Have fun and get listening!!!

Feel free to DM me or any mod suggestions.

Ever since it launched back on August 1, 1981, MTV has been a constant reminder of the central role music videos play in pop culture. Of course, this art form existed well before the network started handing out “moon man” trophies during the first MTV Video Music Awards in September 1984. Music videos were available in some rudimentary form back in the 1960s—the Beatles made a short film for “Strawberry Fields Forever” and “Penny Lane” when the studio-bound band wanted to plug a new single—and they continue to exist long after MTV has largely abandoned music programming.

Nevertheless, it’s impossible to deny that the glory days of the music video were the 1980s and 1990s, when the form dominated popular discourse. Even now the biggest videos of that era—“Thriller,” “...Baby One More Time,” “Vogue,” “Sabotage”—are ever present in pop culture, as much for their visuals as for the songs they accompany. The occasion of the 39th MTV VMAs allows us to look back on the great videos that have been made over the years. Don’t think of this list as comprehensive as much as a thorough sampler, one that illustrates the wide range of music videos and their lasting impact on the culture over the last four decades.

you know what I'm talking about, right?

Bands where, on paper, when you do the math, you should totally be a fan! "If you love X, you'll definitely love Y!" yet something about the band... it... it just didn't hit right with you.

thanks!! I do all my own art, really have fun with it. Had a whole separate thing in works until I was going through my photos and saw the monster in the cavern and just started drawing on it lol

I answered on Mastodon, but I think because there were images in the reply it didn’t federate over (lemmy.world is restricting images due to some trolls posting CSAM).

Here for the album art before & after images: https://mstdn.social/@renwillis/110989722473834561

My reply:

“most proud of? Probaby “I’m in love with you” - a 4 part 15 min epic. Whenever I can pull off a long Yes-length song, I’m so happy. I think I did here!

And yeah, made my own art! We went to the caverns in Shenandoah last month, I took a photo then illustrated over it!”

My first instinct is to share Yes songs, that I can magically pick the song I’m obsessed with that will click with anyone who hears it. But alas……

SO! I’ll go with a more recent song. Island “Set The Fairlight” https://youtu.be/D_blCeS9kdw?si=5JqVazYWz7-acBlp in under 6mins it’s a frenetic sprawling masterpiece of up and down and left and right. Nick always has some prog tendencies (listen to Islands Arm’s Way album all the way through, wow! But this one he kept super tight and fun, and that scratchy fast dry guitar strumming and wild synths! UNf!!!111
