It can be really hard for foreign-to-the-US bands to get attention. Don’t know why in the age of the internet it’s still true but it is.

If I had to guess, UK would be the easiest to cross over. Then probably Canada and Mexico, but after that, I think it’s super super hard for bands to get their music to cross borders still.

this one is much more chill than their last album.

I loved Islands and their last one was frenetic & fun, full of energy after the long break (Nick had originally retired from music). Seems this one is more vibes and quirk. I like it so far, but it's almost a counter-point album to the last one.

I’m not sure I understand. I just shared the lists of releases for this week. These aren’t necessarily albums I’m into, just the list of what’s out for yall to review and see if there’s anything of interest

First song that came in my head was REM's "Losing My Religion" as it truly ushered in college rock / alternative music to the mainstream. BUT - I did an REM song yesterday for cover songs.....

So let's mix it up.

Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know - a Canadian pop star wanna-be got scorned and released a scorching anthem! https://youtu.be/NPcyTyilmYY?si=P0nyHELFnvKJCI2v

Where were you the first time you heard THIS on the radio: "Is she perverted like me? / Would she go down on you in a theater?"

omg! I totally forgot about Collective Soul!!

here you go - Metacritic may or may not have compiled the reviews, but it was on their upcoming release list for today: https://www.metacritic.com/browse/albums/release-date/coming-soon/date

not remotely. Both, my mastodon & my IG feed were filled with that asshats mugshot. Like... LITERALLY filled. I ended up just logging off for the night last night.

Here I subscribe to a lot of non-political & non-meme communities, so it wasn't nearly as aggressive.

You mean: The entire internet right now.

Mitski has unveiled “Star” and “Heaven,” two new songs from her forthcoming album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. She also unveiled a string of European tour dates for October.

According to a press release, both “Star” and “Heaven” were written a few years ago, and have been biding their time, waiting to be adapted and encompassed into a larger work. As The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We began coming together, that moment finally arrived — Mitski teamed up with arranger and conductor Drew Erickson, the two recruited a full orchestra, and versions of both songs were cut, with a sense of openness and subtle craftsmanship that perfectly fits into the album’s sound.

About the song: Siouxie herself has stated that the song is about racist skinheads attacking the restaurant.

“I'll never forget, there was a Chinese restaurant in Chislehurst called the Hong Kong Garden. Me and my friend were really upset that we used to go there and like, occasionally when the skinheads would turn up it would really turn really ugly. These gits would just go in en masse and just terrorise these Chinese people who were working there. We'd try and say 'Leave them alone', you know. It was a kind of tribute.”

NYC-born post-hardcore/alt-metal vets Helmet have announced a new album, Left, which follows 2016’s Dead To The World. It arrives November 10 via earMUSIC. The first single is “Holiday,” which finds Page Hamilton & co’s sludgy attack and soaring melodies in fine form.

Earlier this month, the Philadelphia band Rid Of Me announced their second full-length album, Access To The Lonely, with a track named after themselves, which landed near the top of our best songs of the week list. Today, they’re back with the album’s second single, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Die,” which is brash and bracing and chaotically satisfying. “Yo, bring me death or leave me alone/ You don’t know, so now I go/ I’d rather be dead than pick up the phone,” Itarya Rosenberg howls on it.

From Stereogum: https://www.stereogum.com/2233212/ratboys-the-window-album-review/reviews/album-of-the-week/

Ratboys rule. Ever since they got their start in Notre Dame dorm rooms 13 years ago, the now-Chicago-based band’s powers have been steadily growing, their signature strain of indie rock coming more vividly into focus. Whereas some bands arrive fully formed in a burst of inspiration but eventually lose that initial spark, others hone their craft, find their voice, and just keep getting better. In this case, the process was so gradual that they sort of snuck up on me, but here we are: Ratboys have delivered one of the absolute best albums of 2023.
