Why was it removed in the first place?

What do you think about adding a note that you should upload to IPFS, then wait before posting a link to social media. I don’t know how long it took (a 200mb video) but probably more than 20 minutes less than an hour?

I'll clarify it in the post

I also don’t think I’ll make a great original host since my laptop isn’t on all the time. This is a requirement for 100% uptime of the video if it only exists on one node?

You don't need 100% uptime as gateways usually cache the videos and if they are accessed frequently they wont be purged (depends on the gateway)

Can you see how many nodes are hosting a particular file/CID?

Not really, you can kind of see with the findprovs command but due to the decentralised nature of it theres no way to tell for sure

ublock origin my brother, use it fast before the French find out what's going to happen to them on the 29th

For now you can post in whatever, but if you're posting 50 submissions at once they best be IPFS

unfortunately i'm not familiar with peertube, but anyone is free to post a mirror in the comments. i'm really just waiting for lemmy to add a proper video player/embed support so we'll see what the best option will be from there.

I'm not planning on mass-scraping r/combatfootage to repost on here, but you're fine to do so as long as:

  • It's IPFS
  • Not a repost
  • Good quality

Be sure to not post every 10 seconds, have atleast an hour or so between each post so we don't flood anyone's feed.

I agree that banning it completely would be too hard, but how could using IPFS for videos be encouraged?

IPFS is imo the best way to go, anyone can help store parts of the footage. It's pretty easy to understand if you've ever used torrents. https://github.com/ipfs/ipfs-desktop

Once lemmy adds a proper video player/embed support ill create a comprehensive guide for the community on how to upload. Debating on whether to ban all other 'non-permenant' media (imgur, etc)

I bet it would be as simple as changing your DNS server to bypass this

how are you doing your backups now? are you using the 3-2-1 backup strategy?
