The tariffs will tank consumption and possibly reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

Blue states can raise taxes since the fed government will lower taxes and provide a kickass quality of life without funding the red states.

Since they love the 10th amendment, blue states can go hog wild with running things in a sane manner.

Hell, maybe the US will split into 3: Pacifica on the West Coast, magastan, and Atlantica (East Coast)

You can’t just gloss over tens of thousands of deaths and say got for more of it and harass grieving families for not going with your plan.

Why even bring up Hamas as an excuse, except to avoid addressing Biden’s role in mass starvation of civilians?

I'm not the one making excuses. I voted for Harris. Remember the travel bans early in Trump's first presidency targeting Muslims? Remember his deportation rhetoric. I wouldn't be surprised to find some folks deported to Gaza. I don't wish this on them, but that is a possibility.

The US isn't attacking Gaza, Israel is. What is Biden's role exactly? Providing over 1 billion in aid to Gaza?

[–] neanderthal 1 points 2 months ago (3 children)

It's not a fantasy. It's anger and disdain for the stupidity of voting against their own interests and bringing others down with them, not wishing harm. I've said this in other posts, but I bet there is more than meets the eye with this situation that we aren't privy to. The options were the VP of a guy that did provide some aid to Gaza and told Netanyahu he was going too far, which they feel isn't enough, or a guy that is ok with them just wiping them out. The choice is a chance for Palestine to survive vs all but certain annihilation. Does anyone think Hamas would do anything different if the roles were reversed? I don't have a solution, but Trump is going to give them more of what they have a grievance with.

It has been unusually warm in my area too.

In some states election day is a state holiday so as many people as possible can vote. My state is one of those states.

Oh, you mentioned you don't want to keep a backup of the entire drive. That is fine, but absolutely back it up before starting the install.

I would just boot a live Linux image and dd the entire device file onto some sort of storage. That way you can get a bit for bit copy of the drive that you can make it how it was before you touched it. When all is well, then you can ditch the backup. It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep if the stuff is important. Storage devices do fail.

Yes.

To do this, open a terminal, and do this:

sudo apt search ntfs

It will be called something like ntfs-progs or ntfs-fuse or both.

Then:

sudo apt install PKG1 PKG2

Alternatively, the synaptic package tool has a nice GUI

[–] neanderthal 3 points 3 months ago (6 children)

You could leave the Windows installation and not dual boot. Linux can read NTFS volumes. You will probably have to install ntfsprogs or whatever it's called.

A swap partition is akin to the page file on Windows. The kernel will use it to move memory pages it doesn't anticipate using in the near future to it so it can use that RAM for other things. It will also use it in a pinch when there isn't enough RAM on the system. It isn't strictly necessary, but it can prevent programs from crashing at a huge performance penalty. It is necessary if you want to use sleep or hibernate or whatever it's called when it is powered off physically but resumes what you were doing instead of booting when you power it back on. That takes as much swap as you have RAM at minimum. If you want that, a good rule of thumb is 1.5 times physical RAM.

I have servers I administer for my job that have over 100GB of RAM with very little swap, like 4GB. The applications and machine are tuned and sized so the physical RAM is at ~85% and swap is barely used. The swap is mainly for non application stuff like IDS agent, backup agent, monitoring agent, etc.

If swap becomes a problem, you can adjust the kernel vm.swappiness parameter as needed. It might take some trial and error to get it right.

maybe theres something we dont know that justifies it, so its justified

I'm not saying genocide is justified. I'm saying there is a lot we don't know about the situation. We don't have the intel, we don't know what was said in private conversations between Biden and Netanyahu. Consider the fact that Hamas was using a hospital to store weapons. That means the hospital loses its protected status and bombing it isn't a war crime according to the Geneva conventions. There is also inevitably a lot of propaganda. Maybe you are correct and Biden fully supports the genocide. I highly doubt that. It doesn't negate my point that there is a lot about the situation that we don't really know. Hamas sucks. Israel sucks. It's a dumpster fire.

Am I the only one who believes we shouldn’t pin foreign policy

We don't have access to the same information they do, so we can't easily judge their decision. The POTUS gets to have conversations with world leaders. These conversations convey attitudes, view points, and information we don't have. They have the CIA, am ambassadors that are experts in the respective culture and country, and DIA that they get information from.

For all we know, Israel was going to nuke Gaza and Biden talked them down. Also, I can all but guarantee Hamas would be doing worse if the roles were reversed:

MAX Roku app password box (self.mildlyinfuriating)

I just bought a new Roku. The MAX app won't let me sign in without a 10 character password. My account is old enough to be before this was a requirement. I can sign into their website with my 8 character password just fine.

Save the security lectures. It is a random password only used there. The chance of it being in a world list or brute forced are practically 0.

Title

Mine is probably a breve, although I usually make cortado because it is easy.

I'll admit that when fall rolls around, I'm getting the infamous Starbucks pumpkin spice. We all have our guilty pleasures.

Why: Save money and headache, not just on software or services, but on your tax bill. Software and preparation services won't necessarily teach you about deductions or credits that you can get, saving you money.

Example 1: HSAs. HDHP are popular right now which open up the possibility of an HSA. You can invest funds, tax free, in an HSA much like you would a 401k. If you reach the age 65 or become disabled, you can withdraw from it without a tax penalty. Some HSAs even let you use a standard brokerage account like TD Ameritrade or Schwab. It gets better. If your HR doesn't suck and sets it up under cafeteria rules, the money deposited doesn't even get taxed on Social Security or Medicare. If you have this option, use it before any unmatched 401 contributions. So if your federal marginal rate is 12%, your state marginal rate is 5%, and FICA is ~7.65%, you end up with with roughly 250-500 more dollars in your pocket depending on if you the single or family max applies to you.

Example 2: Retirement contribution credit. If you are lower income, you can get up to a 50% tax credit for retirement account contributions. So if your AGI is low enough, a $1000 IRA contribution only costs $500 because of the tax credit, unless your total tax bill is already 0. Then it doesn't matter. In that case, you should probably use a taxable account so you can access the money without paying a 10% penalty. You don't make nearly enough to be taxed on dividends or capital gains at this point. Understanding these things can save you big or keep you from tying up money in tax shelters unnecessarily.

The FIRE community is a great resource for this sort of thing.

A few of mine:

Influence - Robert Cialdini

Describes simple techniques that can greatly influence people's behavior. Understanding these brings awareness to how people are trying to manipulate you.

Art of Invisibility - Kevin Mitnick

Describes how hard it is to be truly anonymous today and how easy it is to track people. I think everyone deserves to know how much they are being spied on.

I am currently using Stumptown Founder's blend. It is a bit pricey and is Light-Medium at around 15-16 dollars at Target here in the US.

Am I crazy here?

This post was inspired by the recent AMA suggestion.

I'd bet John Oliver would be willing to do a segment on social media with Reddit as an opener, then segue to the Fediverse. It has a wide appeal, recent high profile stories (Twitter wasn't THAT long ago), and the impact of his typical hard hitting segments. BUT, before doing that, what the fediverse lacks is easy to digest information. There needs to be a simple web page with a simple URL that they can put on the show that explains the fediverse and all the equivalent apps. We also need a charismatic spokesperson or two willing to be on the show that can concisely explain the fediverse to the every person. The writers strike is actually in the Fediverse's favor because it provides an opportunity for growth.

Here is why I think this isn't a pipe dream:

  1. Social Media has a giant societal impact, which is the sort of story they like to do.
  2. Almost everyone uses it now so viewer interest would be high.
  3. Current companies have a lot of power to influence people. He loves talking about powerful people.

Forget all the stuff out there that says the GDPR protects EU citizens. This is a question of jurisdiction and enforcement. Say I run a blog under a business registered in the US funded by advertisers in the US. A EU citizen that comments on posts issues a GDPR request that I ignore. Their government fines me. I tell them to get bent, I am out of their jurisdiction. What can they do at that point?

How are lemmy instances being funded, what kind of entity owns them, and if incorporated where? E.g. private individual, LLC, C Corp, non profit, S Corp, Benefit Corp, etc

What do you all think about having the documentation suggest instances supply this?

What are the long term plans for funding?

I think the time to figure this out is now due to the real golden rule: "The one who as the gold makes the rules."

If in the US, I would suggest a benefit corporation. A benefit corporation allows making a profit but isn't the sole aim of the organization. IANAL, but from my understanding it is like a corporation and non-profit hybrid. This provides flexibility and funding opportunities.

What is stopping an instance run by a for profit entity from becoming THE instance and ending up in the same situation as we were with Reddit in X years? I understand the federation aspect, but suppose that instance de-federates.

What does everyone else think? Am I making sense?
