Hi c/selfhosted,

I have another project idea. However, before I start I want to make sure there is interest in the community and a similar project does not exist yet.

I was thinking about a "compose" website that contains the compose files and basic information of the projects listed in the awesome-selfhosted list. Users can search for projects, browse by categories, etc. In my opinion when finding a new project you want to try out it, is a bit cumbersome to find the corresponding compose file to get started.

Let me know if there is any interest in such a project. Also I have no idea how I would name the project, so give me your best suggestions :). Thanks!

I just tried using the download attribute out. I am also using librewolf and even with the download attribute it will open a new tab when the default behaviour (applications -> pdf -> open in librewolf) is enabled.

  1. this is only for the demo mode. I don't want to have user files on the demo instance. On the log in screen of the demo instance, there is also note regarding this.
  2. this might be because of your browser. are you using a firefox based browser by any chance? I had the same issue and had to adjust this behavior in the settings.
  3. you are right. I already made the changes, so this is fixed.

I'll think about the other two suggestions.

I started to develop PdfDing because I wanted to continue reading where I left of regardless of the device I am on. That's not possible with a standalone app.

Without more information I am kind of guessing. But probably you need to set the HOST_NAME env variable to the address (e.g. pdfding.homelab) you try to access the app in the browser.

You can select Page Fit in the Zoom drop down menu and then use the left and right arrow keys to jump between pages. This should give you the wanted functionality. It's not possible to do this with the mouse however.

Today I reached a big milestone as PdfDing reached over 600 stars on github. A good portion of these stars probably comes from being included in the favorite selfhosted apps launched in 2024 on selfh.st.

Here is a quick overview over the project's features:

  • Seamless browser based PDF viewing on multiple devices. Remembers current position - continue where you stopped reading
  • Stay on top of your PDF collection with multi-level tagging, starring and archiving functionalities
  • Edit PDFs by adding annotations, highlighting and drawings
  • Clean, intuitive UI with dark mode, inverted color mode and custom theme colors
  • SSO support via OIDC
  • Share PDFs with an external audience via a link or a QR Code with optional access control
  • Markdown Notes

There is not much I can do as this functionality is provided by mozilla's pdf.js library (this also powers the pdf reader of firefox).

Currently, there is no ocr. I also don't know if I'll add at some point in the future. It kinda clashes with the philosophy of keeping it simple and minimal as it is quite resource hungry.

I just checked, I usually don't use the app on a mobile device. If you want to highlight text on mobile:

  • open the highlight menu
  • select the text as if you were to copy it (long press, etc)
  • then click on a color
  • the text should now be highlighted

here's another Update on PdfDing, the selfhosted PDF manager, viewer and editor offering a seamless user experience on multiple devices. You can find the repo here.

Thanks to being included in the favorite selfhosted apps launched in 2024 on selfh.st, PdfDings's popularity improved greatly. This week the project crossed the 500 Stars on github, which was a big milestone for me. Thanks! Another thing that made me quite happy is that PdfDing got its first two contributions!

Milestones aside there were also new features and improvements since my last post:

  • PDFs can be starred and archived. Starred and archived PDFs can be quickly accessed in the overview. Archived PDFs are hidden from the default overview.
  • New (beautiful) theme inspired by fli.so. You can find a screenshot here.
  • Preview mode: the first page of each PDF can be shown in the overview without entering the viewer.
  • Optional thumbnail mode: The first page of each PDF will be shown as a thumbnail in the overview.
  • Design improvements that (in my opinion) make the whole application feel cleaner and more beautiful
  • I have created a helm chart so it can be easily installed on Kubernetes

Hi, I am the developer of PdfDing. One thing I am not sure about is the frequency of my releases. What do you folks prefer in self-hosted projects? More releases in order to get new features as fast as possible or fewer releases with bigger feature additions?

Hi c/selfhosted,

I am the developer of PdfDing. As this feature was requested quite often I wanted to inform you that it is now possible to edit PDFs by adding annotations, highlighting and drawings. You can find the repo here.

I also got the feedback that organizing PDFs with simple tags does not work for many people. It is now possible to organize PDFs with multi-level tags. I hope this will improve the user experience.

If you like PdfDing I would be really happy over a star on GitHub. As the project is open source, if anyone wants to contribute you are welcome to do so!
