Not being directly charged and found guilty isn't the trump card they think it is. Most Nazis were never punished, many top brass went on to shape the west into what it is today.
Then the US never was.

It frustrates me to no end when people cluelessly argue that since doctors and pencil pushers and janitors are also in militaries, that somehow makes it better and or even a non-violent institution.

The comparison to the carbon or ecological footprint may be apt. The concept came from British Petroleum and was a successful propaganda campaign to individualize the blame of climate change. In many respects its the same with digital footprint. Sure you can minimize your own footprint, of whichever type, by making huge personal sacrifices, but that won't have much effect on the bigger pircite. The superstructure of ecological destruction or an internet that is used to surveil and sell cannot be changed without revolution.
