We had this same problem and did just this. 3 years later still no changes. Until my dad happened to be complaining about it at a party and was introduced to a friend of a friend that worked at Google with the maps team. Was finally fixed a week later. Planes can also move out of the way of other planes, and have air traffic controllers directing them.
