What do you mean when you say that literally everything is behind a paywall? The core features are accessible for free.
Got mine from a friend for $150. It was so good despite its less than ideal battery life.

You can try using Tasker to create a task that turns on NFC and launches Google Wallet / Pay afterwards.
After that, create another profile to turn off NFC when the screen is locked.
It's targeted towards tablet users, but I still feel that there are way better and cheaper phone/tablet combos out there.
