This discussion has forced me to ponder my own preferences and prejudices in the genre. This is strictly a personal list. Feel free to ignore it.

  1. Terminal based
  2. ASCII interface available if not default
  3. Turn based play
  4. Still under active development (perhaps open source)
  5. Complexity (you encounter something new every game, forever)
  6. Difficult but not impossible for mere mortals (can include permadeath)

There will be no fighting from me. My primary focus is NetHack, which btw didn't score 100% on the metric either. Rather than rogue-like, perhaps I should have opted for "significantly similar to NetHack", which is my own standard...

Well, it's a fairly old standard but a place to start. I needed some sort of reference. And for me, the turn based makes more sense if you are dealing with a constantly looming permadeath...

Valkyrie, especially dwarf, is considered one of the more straightforward choices. Perhaps more familiar for those coming from a heavy hack-n-slash melee background. Barbarian, especially orc, is similar if a bit darker...

That isn't my intent. I spent some time on the subreddit several years ago but I eventually drifted away. But with all the current reddit news, much like the twitter news last year, I decided to see if there was a nethack community on lemmy. Couldn't find one. Thought about it a few days and finally said, "Sure, why not?" Hopefully this isn't going to be me providing a monologue, though. I just wanted a place to talk about the game, preferably with others...
