I guess probably, because Matrix is thought for private chatting, i guess someone else might have had this same idea, i think matrix is opensource so there must be some client that does this.

I mean theoretically if you are hosting your own chat server, for example on Matrix, you can easily make all the chats unaccessible from the clients by issuing a command to shutdown your server or simply the chat server service if there's no content cached locally.

I think you can do this pretty easily with a raspberry pi by connecting via ssh..

Just use a shell script that changes the static ip to something else after the command to shutdown the service/wipe out the data (depending on what your goal is) has been issued, or use a vpn or something like that if possible, because anyone issuing the command would need to know your server ip.

And issuing a command by ssh to a remote server both from smartphone or pc should be as easy that you can actually build a very small app for that, or use some app that creates shortcuts that directly connects and issue custom commands.

That way you are forced to give people your new ip every time chats become unaccessible/deleted and someone can't connect back even if wanting to without talking to you, unless you decide you can use the older ip for whatever reason.

Of course not using your real ip but using some service like a vpn or proxy (or tor?) would be much better here, but i don't really know how.

That can give you full power on the chat history and create the said "panic button" for every client involved.

There's Bitcoin and lightning network :)

If it was less expensive and provided some privacy i would probably happily pay for it.

This app is amazing! I loved the infinity design, that's so fucking amazing you took the time to bring it on Lemmy, i never really liked Jeroba!

I simply backup the /home folder, where the important files are with duplicity on my home server with ftp once a week, keeping records of the last 6 months. But as that only restores the home folder i also take a snapshot (which takes way more disk space) every month with timeshift too, which stays on the pc. Would be great if i could take complete snapshots via ftp just like with duplicity, but timeshift doesn't do that.

In ogni caso sarebbero centrali, censurabili e controllabili.

The RSS feature is amazing, i wanted to do something like that with RSS Bridge, but it looks like both Instagram and Facebook are doing their best to block exactly these kind of things, so it works half of the times and it needs to be fixed quite often, i think now it doesn't work very well either... Also it is very complicated to be set up if you don't know a bit of PHP. Of course i'm willing to learn but all this blocking that projects like this (see Barinsta or Bibliogram) get is really discouraging. I think Meta content is probably one of the worst to scrape.

Regarding Proxygram: for now it works, i'm using a public istance to grab some RSS feeds, if it proves to be reliable i will be happy to host my own istance as well, if possible :) It's sometimes slow to grab data (i guess because sessions get easily blocked/limited, getting error 500) but not really a problem as i just want to see new events every couple of days, one issue tho is that the RSS doesn't show all the posts (only showing the last three of them), which can be annoying as you may lose something if you don't see it and save it.

EDIT: It actually does get other posts as well, just reaaally slowly, meaning that if you follow really large accounts in a week or so you can find your feed full of older posts marked as unread.

Anyway thanks to whoever is making the hard job of building/owning an instagram scraper, I really know it can be tough.

I work for an association and every time i get the material for a new blog post i need to format, publish it on the blog and then design different types of post for FB, IG and Telegram with their own formatting. That requires plenty of time and work.

Ideally, i would love to create a blog where i can publish items ONE TIME, and then get social designs (with one or two alternative types of designs) and getting the text formatted right to be published.

The website is on wordpress right now, but i'm studying webdevelopment and i would really love to remake it in plain code with HTML, CSS and JS / JS frameworks. I'm not seeking to do this on Wordpress, on the opposite i would like to move away from it.

I know i would have to work with the APIs of the socials in order to get the content automatically published and with AI to get a quick text formatting: for example cutting some key parts of a text automatically. I have no clue for the design part, right now i'm using Canva but i always do pretty simple designs and all by hand.

I know this is probably a pretty ambitious project but it would leave me with A LOT less work once all of this is correctly set up, and replicating this for other blogs would simply be awesome.

How much is this makable? Would it require a lot of paid services, are the APIs usually free for such a small use? Where should i start from to learn how implementing the auto design part? Can a Junior webdeveloper do something like this in a reasonable amount of time, or are these pretty advanced skills?

During the years i've been subscribed to plenty of stuff, changing email (getting away from gmail) would seem impossible as i would have the fear to lose some old account i forgot but that i may need in the future. During 2021 i've been subscribed to plenty of crypto trading exchanges, KYCed on most of them, most even if deleting the account, do not delete your personal data.

I was doing trading, and doing it without a centralized exchange wasn't really an option as i was trading plenty of stuff and in low volumes.

I'm subscribed to Instagram but my account got locked because i was using Barinsta and advertising 3rd party apps, so now i can't even access it to delete it.

I won't mention what, but there are also other accounts tied up to my prepaid card name and purchases, and to my name in the email as well..

I feel like i've been fucking up and i feel a bit overwhelmed by the fact that i know i won't be able to remove important pieces of data from the web.

I wish there was something like coinjoin for accounts as well🤣.

Am i being too paranoid or overstating the risk? How'd you act in my place?

Hi all!

I am learning JavaScript and web development, and while i really like this road, i sometimes feel a bit alone following online courses and i think adding new brains would definetely help us to grow better, would anyone like to join and make a group where we share, learn and grow together?

I feel like we need to build a better web after all this Reddit thing, why not start together from the fundamentals?

We can do this on Telegram!

This is quite unclear to me, the definition of global object seem to be "The global object provides variables and functions that are available anywhere".

Now this surely means that the global variable environment contains variables available everywhere in the other scopes, but does this also mean that, for example, the window object is at the higher end of the scope chain? As in JS everything is an object, is this true for the prototype chain too? Because from my notes Object.prototype looks to be at the top of the prototype chain.

In fact if i do: Object.getPrototypeOf(window) i get WindowPrototype { … }

but if i do: Object.getPrototypeOf(Object.prototype) i get null

Another thing unclear to me is what is the difference between window (lowercase) and Window (uppercase).. I know that uppercases are usually used for constructors, is this the case too? Is Window a constructor and window an object? If so, what's the purpuose of the Window constructor?

Hi Lemmy!

I'm studying webdevelopment, i love the concept of the fediverse and activitypub, but i still see it as really new and needing to get better of course.

I will just throw out some first impressions, these are just from a first sight so i'd be happy if you make me notice i'm saying something false or inaccurate.

As i said in the title i would really love to collaborate, so i'm just exposing stuff i would love to work to, just to see what others think about it and if they could be theoretically possible.

The Fediverse claims to be highly interconnected, yet i cannot use the account i have on a mastond instance on Lemmy, and neither the opposite. I don't see why there has to be many instances of the same thing and so many accounts needed to access, for example if i want to browse Kbin with my Lemmy account, i won't be able to, but i can create a new account and find some content of Lemmy on it or browse privately.

The system of mentions is quite confusing as well and i don't see these differentiation of istances a pro for the network, if an istance goes down the content on that istance goes down as well.

More that having to reference each server istance, it would maybe be an idea to have one single domain holding all the istances, much like IPFS and blockchain nodes. More servers hosting the content for the same platform, backed up by a pinning service such as Pinata for IPFS, not different servers holding different content loads.

I want to be able to subscribe to one single Fediverse account, and be able to use it in every different federated platforms.

I'll take the user login as an example: If i login in a federated platform, IPFS would perform a node lookup and find my account details on one of the federated servers, instead of having to specify which server i want the account info to be coming from.

All of this would still need to be backed up: 1- because node lookup is quite slow 2- because if one or more istances go down, there has to be a reliable and fast backup available to keep the platform running, even if the content is already duplicated in more IPFS servers.

Of course with this option there HAS to be a central server with all the data on it in order to make them readily available and make the user experience acceptable.

Another possibility would be using really light languages (such as Rust that doesn't have a runtime for example) to build the platforms and see what the performances are WITHOUT a pinning service and so without the need of a central server.

Please don't be harsh on me, i'm just jotting down some ideas!
