For any major operations like this, I always save the current commit with a tag. Very easy to get back to the original commit in case something blows up.

Synchronous means each write (flush) to the pipe blocks on a read. Both programs need to be running concurrently.

+1 on the Rosewill cases. I bought the IstarUSA rails and managed to mangle the bearings on one side. It's still generally functional though.
