let's see if this community is better at responding to these than c/kirby! :p

toby fox is famous for his use of leitmotifs. what specific instances do you find compelling, interesting, memorable, etc?

Kirby's house. Kirby's going out to take care of some business.

Kirby, smiling wide: Oh! Before I leave, I had a really cool idea that I wrote down on a piece of paper! I hid it somewhere! Try to find it! Bye!

Bandee and Elfilin, happy: Bye Kirby!

They immediately start searching for that piece of paper. Not even ten seconds later...

Elfilin, happy: Found it! He just hid it under the table. Now, what "really cool idea" did he write down...?

Elfilin, sad: ...I can't read his handwriting. Bandee, can you read it?

Bandee, sad: ...No, I can't! I can usually read his handwriting just fine, but this is some really messy handwriting, even for him!

Bandee, happy: ...For his handwriting to be this bad, he must've been really excited! Let's just ask him about it when he comes back!

Some time later...

Elfilin: Kirby! You're back! We found the paper that you hid! ...But neither of us could read your handwriting. What was your "really cool idea?"

Kirby, happy: I, um, forgot! Lemme see what I wrote again...

Kirby, frowning: ...I can't read it, either!

The end.

this is a mini-installment of New World Friends Chat, the undertale text box thing that i'm now doing. first installment here (lemmy) or here (pixelfed, which is a image-sharing fediverse platform)

...it wasn't well received :(

if you have any criticism for this project, please share it so that i can more effectively contribute nice stuff to this community! anything from technical issues to art quality to writing/characterization to you-just-don't-want-to-see-this-project-on-c/kirby. what can i do better on?

it's meant to play in a loop, but for whatever reason lemmy seems to not do well with that

this person draws great art, including lots of great kirby art! this is one of the cuter forgotten land ones

a wonderful, lesser-known kirby "with lyrics" fanwork! to echo the pinned comment, you can view the lyrics as being from bandana dee's perspective, which makes things even cuter!

accessible version (not an exact replication, i'm more aiming for an equivalent user experience):

Kirby and Bandana Dee are giving Elfilin a tour of Castle Dedede.

Bandee, happy: ...And finally, my room!

Bandee opens the door. The three of them go in.

Bandee: Man, it's been so long since I've last been in here!

Bandee, happy: It's good to be home!

Elfilin, happy: It's a really nice room!

Elfilin: ...Um, what are all these big boxes for?

Bandee, eyes sparkling: Oh! My apple juice collection!

Bandee zips over to the large boxes, stabs one open with a spear, and pulls out a juice box, all in the span of a second or two.

Bandee happily sips apple juice.

Elfilin, shocked: Whoa...

Kirby, smiling: Bandee just loves apple juice! Dedede put all those boxes here just for him!

Bandee, happy: I haven't had any in so long! It's as good as ever!

Kirby, smiling wide: ...I want some too!

Bandee, happy: Here, catch!

Kirby, smiling: Thanks Bandee!

Kirby realizes something.

Kirby: Wait!

Kirby runs over to the apple juice boxes, his own unopened juice box in hand.

Kirby, smiling wide: Let's play the Apple Juice Game!

Elfilin, confused: The Apple Juice Game?

Bandee, happy: The Apple Juice Game!

Bandee: Whoever drinks the most apple juice wins!

Kirby, smiling wide: It's a thing we do a lot whenever I visit Bandee's room!

Kirby, smiling: Ready, Bandee?

Bandee finishes his juice box and grabs a new one.

Bandee: Ready! 3... 2... 1...

Kirby and Bandee, happily in unison: Go!

Kirby and Bandee drink apple juice at... well, at the pace you'd expect from those two in particular, really.

Bandee's simultaneously humming the Apple Scramble theme. Somehow.

Elfilin, scared: Don't drink so fast!

Kirby and Bandee, to the surprise of nobody but Elfilin, don't listen.

...In fact, they start to drink even faster.

Elfilin, worried: Aren't you guys afraid of choking?

No response. They're both too busy drinking apple juice.

They finish juice box after juice box after juice box. The empty, discarded juice boxes form an ever-growing pile on the floor.

As the game goes on, Elfilin has some inner monologue.

Shocked: That's more than ten juice boxes already!

Scared: How many more are they gonna drink?!

Back to normal: ...Huh, was Bandee humming something this whole time?

Happy: ...It's kinda catchy!

As the song reaches its climax, Kirby joins in on the humming.

In pain: Ow! My eardrums-- Whoa!

Shocked: How did that pile of empty juice boxes suddenly become twice as big!?

Elfilin's monologue ends.

Kirby and Bandee hum the final five notes of the song as they finish off the final few juice boxes in the large box.

Bandee, happy: ...And we're outta apple juice!

Kirby, happy: Poyo!

Elfilin, worried: ...Um, how many juice boxes was that...?

Bandee, happy: Well, each of these big boxes has 30 juice boxes, so that's how many we drank in total!

Elfilin is shocked into silence.

Elfilin, putting up a happy face: ...So, then... who won?

Bandee, happy: Oh, we don't actually keep track!

Kirby, happy: We both got to drink a whole bunch of yummy apple juice!

Bandee, happy: So in a way, we both won!

Elfilin: ...Oh...

Bandee: Wanna try some for yourself, Elfilin?

Elfilin: ...Um, sure...

Elfilin: But, um, just one, please.

Bandee opens up another large box. He takes out five juice boxes: two for him, two for Kirby, and one for Elfilin.

Elfilin, happy: ...Wow! It is really tasty!

Bandee, happy: I'm glad you like it!

Kirby, smiling wide: Maybe you could join us next time we play the Apple Juice Game?

Elfilin thinks for a moment.

Elfilin, happy: ...Well, it does seem kinda fun!

The end.

[screen-reader-friendly text-only version here.]

and here we are! this is the first installment of what will hopefully be a regularly updating series. kirby, bandana dee, and elfilin chat about stuff and do various other things.

i'm not good at visual art, but i am reasonably good at programming, and i figure i'm not horrible at writing dialogue (though i don't have much experience in that department). so the logical way for me to contribute original content to this community is exactly what this series will be: a thing told through the format of undertale-style text boxes, similar to stuff like Conversations from the Lunch Table. only with kirby characters instead of toby fox characters.

don't have a firm idea what i want the release schedule for this thing to look like, but my main goal with this series is for c/kirby to have a steady stream of reasonably high-ish quality oc content. i'll be posting non-oc stuff if there's ever a shortage of ideas/motivation on my end.

all in all, it was quite fun working on this project. if anyone wants source code or anything, please let me know.

hope you enjoy the new world friends' first chat of many! if you have any questions, feel free to ask them! i'll probably be having a long-overdue sleep soon, but i'll try to respond to anything i see whenever i'm awake enough to do so.

edit: changed elfilin's text color to make it less of a pain to read.

[–] NumericBiconditional 1 points 1 year ago

i thought i was done, but then some time later there were various tweaks and changes i wanted/needed to make to the portraits. making bandee more red, correcting elfilin's nose colour (it was originally the same as his inner ear colour for some reason), changing a certain portrait type to make it convey its thing more effectively, etc.

i'll be checking things over again, one last time if i'm (un)lucky (it's lucky to catch things in time, but it's even luckier to not have anything that needs to be caught). assuming everything goes smoothly, prepare to see a new post from me in 1-3 hours.

[–] NumericBiconditional 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i'm pretty much done with everything! expect to see the final product sometime tomorrow (well, in my timezone, technically today).

all of the necessary portraits are done! (as are some unused ones that were convenient to make from other portraits.) i also spent an ungodly amount of time on an "hd" (read: 144×144 instead of 48×48) version of a certain portrait. which you won't be seeing in the project itself but maybe i'll post it at some point. i was going to do the same thing with the other characters' versions of the portrait but then i decided against it because it would require an even ungodlier amount of time and effort.

all of the other portrait work, in contrast, was actually quite easy. thankfully.

i was going to post just that back when i finished the portrait stuff, but then lemmy.world was down so instead i started work on the rest of the programming that i had to do. that was... a journey. tougher than i expected, but not too bad. somehow the code actually got less messy the more i worked on it???

anyway! just a few final things and i'll be ready! i have a near-final version of the thing at hand, and... well, it wasn't exactly the scene i was imagining in my head, but i still like the final result! i literally just had an idea as i was looking over the thing as i was writing the previous few sentences! so i'll do that, do some final checks, transcribe things into a screen-reader-friendly form, and then i'll be set to share it all with you guys in somewhere between 6 and 18 hours depending on my sleep schedule! =D

[–] NumericBiconditional 1 points 1 year ago

wow! that's alotta poyos

[–] NumericBiconditional 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

i'm gonna use this thread as a place to post status updates on the project

i got kirby, bandee, and elfilin's neutral sprites done yesterday, as well as all of the coding until i realized i should probably do some stuff to make line wrapping and text overflow less painful to deal with. today i'll be working on that, as well as the rest of the dialogue portraits. will hopefully be less of a pain now that i have base images to build off of.

here's a silly demo i made yesterday

silly demo, transcription below

transcription:
Everyone say something!
[kirby open smile]: Poyo!
[bandee neutral]: Wanya!
[elfilin neutral]: Um... Hi?

[–] NumericBiconditional 1 points 1 year ago

one kirby post at a time! let's all make this community a thriving one!

...though it would be easier to do that if the servers didn't have problems every now and then. tried to post this from lemm.ee, it didn't federate here. ah well, new platform, occasional problems are expected and all that

[image: a pixel art drawing of kirby's smiling face (just his face, not his limbs) against a cyan background]

this community hasn't had a post in five days, so here's something i just finished today! (it only took forever to get that mouth looking reasonably good...)

edit: moved the eyes and cheek blushes closer together because it turns out bandee would've been too wide otherwise. also revised the mouth, again. it's hard to make it look good with such a limited number of pixels, but that's the tradeoff when working with low-size pixel art: fewer pixels that need to be worked with, but also fewer pixels to work with.

edit 2: changed the background colour because it was too close to elfilin's colour.

for a while now, i've had an idea for some reasonably low-effort oc content that i could post here. would take quite a bit of upfront work (which is what i'm currently doing), but afterwards i'll hopefully be able to put something out semi-regularly for this community. not sure when i'll be done, but again, this community hasn't had a new post in 5 days (and it hasn't had a new post from someone other than KirbySSM in 11 days), so i'm making this post now.

in the meantime, i might be posting some non-oc stuff over the next few days, just so c/kirby has some new stuff to look at. i encourage everyone else to do the same -- and also comment on other people's posts, if you have something to say!

we have (-512, -512) as the bottom left corner and (512, 512) as the top right corner

i tried to make shapes match up with the original image, to some extent.
you can't see it in the final version of the code,

i would overlay the original image on top of my version with 50% opacity

[image: the lemmy logo, but with elfilin's eyes, cheek blushes, ear notch, and general colouration. still retains the original whiskers, ears (size-wise), and nose.]

here's the more polished version of elfilem that i promised! it was pretty fun to work on, and i'm quite proud of the final result. instead of just roughly eyeballing everything, i leveraged the power of code (i.e. wrote an svg file by hand) and used Precise Numbers™ to dictate the position and size of things.

seems like lemmy doesn't support uploading svg files, so instead i uploaded a png version. not sure if and how i'll share the original svg -- would certainly love to! i commented the code specifically so that others could get a better understanding of what i did to draw each thing.

edit: never mind, just pasted the svg source code into a comment below

list of notable changes from the original elfilem:

  • eyes are now significantly higher up than they were originally
  • cheek blushes are now larger, fully visible circles
  • inner orange part of ears now extends fully downward to more accurately match elfilin's appearance
  • eyes now have a dark blue outline
  • various colours have been changed

created with the help of the following:

this is the most effort i've put into a drawing in a long time. but i think the result is worth it! :)

edit: the white outline was lost in the background the first time i uploaded this. after some shenanigans on my end, here's a version that includes the white outline as it's supposed to!... unless you're on kbin apparently edit 2: made the new image properly spaced instead of "cramped" (cropped to have no extra space)

[–] NumericBiconditional 2 points 1 year ago

thanks!

you have my permission if you want to use it as the c/kirby icon! though in that case, i would like to create a more polished version (as in, making sure everything is actually symmetrical and stuff). should take no longer than 3 days. feel free to use the current version and/or a more polished version for any c/kirby thing you want!

as you can tell by my decreased posting activity the last few days, i've run out of ideas for reasonably-low-effort oc content to post here! this was my final idea of this sort -- kind of a spiritual successor to kirbby. (i do have some other things i want to make and post here, but it'll probably take a good while to actually make them.)

this time around i actually had to manually draw some details instead of just copy-pasting stuff, so it took a bit more effort to make and the technical quality's not as good. still, hope you enjoy this little guy!

created using paint.net and this lemmy logo that i got from wikipedia

could be from the anime, smash bros, concerts, memorial arrangements, kirby cafe, anything other than the kirby games themselves!

[image: kibby, the unofficial kbin bird mascot, coloured pink like kirby. a cheek blush similar to kirby's has also been addded.]

although my accounts are mostly on lemmy, i actually mainly browse using kbin.

i just saw this post declaring the new name of the unofficial kbin bird mascot to be "kibby". to celebrate, here he is in kirby's colours

created using paint.net and two of the pictures in the image linked in the linked post (the normal version and the one with the blush and bow). colours were chosen to be consistent with my quadrupedal kirby drawing.

(posted on this account instead of the lemm.ee one because kbin.social federation is being weird and i want people at kbin to be able to see it.)

why say "vortexes" like a normal person when you can instead use the cooler plural that's consistent with "vertices", "matrices", and "indices" (among other words)? (for the record, wiktionary lists both words as plurals of "vortex".)

here's the "slightly higher effort meme" that i promised. it actually took a stupidly long time to make because of various technical difficulties. again, not an expert meme maker. not yet.
