It's not good for beginners. I'll give him that. This whole thread is about getting a laptop your mom can figure out.
If you end up being full time tech support then it's not worth it.
That being said, I gave one of the most computer illiterate people Linux mint and she was able to browse the internet just fine.
Chrome Os is probably the best happy medium at the moment though for people who don't want windows but want a windows like experience
