Help with Proxmox (self.selfhosted)
submitted 1 year ago by JasonWeen to c/selfhosted

Hi I need some help with Proxmox. If you can please redirect me to useful ressources (I read the official Doku but it didn't really help)

I am having problem understanding the different types of storages and how to access them in a vm for example. Example words are:

  • ZFS, ISCI, LVM, LVM-thin...
  • Bus Controller (Virtio SCSI, IDE,... )

I feel like these are basic topics but I don't seem to understand anything. My latest problem was me trying to pass a third of an ssd (1TB) an another 128 GB from another ssd. I wanted to use the small volume as boot and the big volume as slow storage in a Windows vm but I got an error message about a bus beeing used multiple times. [sorry I don't have the config anymore]

So if someone could redirect me to sth which would help me understand the whole storage virtualization and storage config for vms topic, I would be very grateful.

Thank you in advanced kind stranger.

Fanless NAS (self.homelab)

Hi I got a very specific recommendation request:

I would like to build a fanless rackmount NAS for my homelab. Fanless because I am sleeping next to it. So to achieve that I don't want any moving part, hence SSDs and fanless cooling. Rackmount So I can neatly store it in my rack. Ideally I want to run Truenas on it and be not fendor restricted so I cam expand and modify it myself. So I thought about getting a maybe 2U maybe higher case. But here starts my trouble: I want it to support at least 6 external drives and consumer tower PSU because industrial server PSU are not build to be silend. I hope you guys can follow me.

TL;DR: I need a 2U rackmount case with 6+ (4+) external drives and supporting consumer PSU (fanless Design) for a NAS. No pre-build or at least easy modifiable.

Please ask any questions or ask for any infos you need :) Thank you for your time.

Subrent domain (self.selfhosted)
submitted 1 year ago by JasonWeen to c/selfhosted

I have a few unused Domains and I would like to subrent them for free for interested selfhoster. Any recommendations on how to do so? I tried weebly but it seemed way to complicated. Should I just go with a website and then an email contact?

Do you still wanna try?

[–] JasonWeen 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Well I just started a few days ago and spent a few hours so there isn't a lot of a base.

But yeah I'd love to someone to join me. Would be my first open source project.

But be warned I am learning to code for only two years ("Ausbildung zum Fachinformatiker für Anwendungsentwicklung" in german) so it probably would be more like me contributing to your project. If you're still interested I'll setup a github project and send you the link.

Virtual NAS (self.selfhosted)
submitted 1 year ago by JasonWeen to c/selfhosted

Okay I saw this posted a lot and apparently it is pretty common but why do people virtualize your nas in for example a proxmox server/cluster. If that goes down it gets super hard to get your data back than if you do it bare Metal, doesn't it? Are people only doing it so save on seperate devices or are my concerns unreasonable?

[–] JasonWeen 1 points 1 year ago

Oooooooh shit. Completly overlooked that

Uuuh I absolutely love grafana. Worked half a year with it for my job. I am happy it worked out great for you.

[–] JasonWeen 1 points 1 year ago

Hm okay thank you. I'll read it

[–] JasonWeen 1 points 1 year ago

Thank you. I'll look into it

What do you mean Tiny/Miny/Micros?

[–] JasonWeen 1 points 1 year ago

Just small demanding services as a pihole, pfsense, openvpn. Stuff that permanently needs to run. Maybe a website or a minecraft server but probably not.

I was actually looking for the orange pi (learned about them from ltt) but I can't find any rackmount (I want everything nice and clean in there) and reasonable prices.

Also I don't think I can use raspberry pi rackmount can I?

Pi or Nuc (self.homelab)

Hi I am currently struggling with deciding between Pis (all variants e.g. Orange Pi) and Nucs as I can't find any for a reasonable price. Do you guys have any recommandation for me? German/European Stores maybe? I am looking for the best efficency to performance ratio for a low price. Basically just small computing units that I can cluster ideally in a 1U Rackmount.
