I have a bee hotel that I keep. I also live on 3 acres abuting a 250 acre preserve forest, so its normally full of all types of bees in my yard.

Super jealous. We’re within city limits, on .5 acres. Doing things on a muuuuuuch smaller scale!
What are the pieces of colored chalk for?
They’re little sticks that you place in some of the holes to help the bees figure out which spot is theirs. Since there are so many holes so close together, is kind of easy for the bees to get confused and frustrated to the point of leaving. They’re clever enough to know their hole is “two up from the green stick”, or “four to the right of yellow, but below the red.”
