Between this and the iOS 17 standby feature, it seems like Apple likes the idea of displays showing information instead of just being black. Not really sure why they wouldn’t just make this a macOS feature though, dumb to limit this to some sort of smart monitor instead of just using the computer it is connected to.

Well Apple tends to point the direction they want to go….

The display has an iPhone chip in it.

They have talked about the new display mode for iPhones when they are charging

They have had the always on mode where the screen only refreshes once per second.

Yeah it kinda makes sense that they would make the screen saver a bit more useful

Iphone chip is mad overkill WTF that's like several hundred dollars worth of processing power

they also have tons of them just laying around, gives them a really powerful, efficient display controller.

The current studio display already has the A13, I’d expect all future monitors to come with with iPhone SoC.

And they can sell it for hundreds more than that on top. There's the real reason.

This is gonna work wonderfully with OLED screens which love persistent elements being displayed all the time

LCDs also suffer from burn in. As long as you move the content around a bit it should be fine

Just saying as someone who has had a few OLEDs screen retention is permanent and easy-ish to do with bright panels.

As long as the graphic moves every once in a while it should be fine (as far as I know)

I just want a HomePod type device that combines being smart speaker/soundbar, Apple TV, and an AirPort(WiFi router) all in one 😞 Throw a display in it to make the Apple TV really be a TV and I will give all the money

I want that too! “Apple Hub” type thing to be the center of the smart home. Unfortunately I assume that combining Apple TV, HomePod and router would be too niche (and expensive for consumers) for Apple to actually make.

How long until they release a HomePod with a screen?

How long until they release a new HomePod with a display built in?

Sounds like a good way to waste electricity
