Why does she get off so cheap with only 30 days?

She could have completely ruined the lives of those people, as bad as if she had tried to kill them with a knife.

This is actually a form of assault, and should be punished way harder IMO.

There's probably a statute on filing false reports that has a punishment cap. Which isn't bad, given that police sometimes make mistakes and charge DV and sexual assault victims with filing false reports when really those crimes are just really really hard to prove.

I'd call filing a false report because of racism a hate crime, though.

Agreed. The article describes a criminal trial, but I believe once that's over the victimized couple can sue in civil court, for compensation (not jail time.)

Some people will do ANYTHING to feel relevant. I hope the innocent couple is able to retain a good lawyer, that's one mother who deserves to be sued.

I've read several articles and watched several videos about this. Why doesn't the lawyer ever explain, in more detail, how she misinterpreted the situation?
