I’m using cloudflare. Their API is pretty simple so it’s easy to keep the record up to date.

I'll second DuckDNS. Works great. Configured on my firewall to automatically update.

Dynamic DNS service, or update client?

I have a domain name I have purchased, and have several sub domains for various services that I expose to the internet. My home IP is not static.

I use Inadyn as my DNS update client. Easy single config file to edit, and low resource client. Simple and just works for me. I know A LOT of people use DDClient I just personally found Inadyn easier to stup.
