So, which version do you prefer? N64? The XBLA leak? Swich Online?

I think I like them all, however, my favorite will always be the N64 release. So many great memories of proximity mines in the temple, or Oddjob slapping the shit out of me from a dark corner

I like them all, but inside my heart of hearts, my real favorite would probably be

spoilerPerfect Dark.

There is also the Xbox Game Pass release, which is my favourite.

The XBLA version looked great but it’s inaccessible, the Switch version hasn’t gotten the graphical upgrades and the N64 version is hampered by awful controls that don’t age well.

The XGP version solves all of this. It’s not perfect, but I did enjoy my time with it.

This is the way, the Xbox Game Pass version is most modernized version while staying true to the original game.

Good point, there is in fact an XGP release too. I haven't had the pleasure...

I've gotten a lot of hate for saying this but Goldeneye is probably the worst aged game held up in such high regard. The most "nostalgia goggled" I guess. It is what it is, it's a console FPS from before Halo, they were just wonky back then. But N64 controls on goldeneye border on unplayable for anybody that didn't play it as a kid.

Anyone who doesn't know about the available control schemes built-in to the game should explore them all. Beyond that, you can youse WSAD+Mouse on via emulation.

You could also try out 1964 GEPD, which is a special emulator for Golden Eye and Perfect Dark. It has improved controller support so that it plays better on normal controllers and even has Mouse+Keyboard support. 60 FPS, and unlocked resolution. Works really well on pc and Steamdeck.

Other than a few bugs here and there, the XBLA version really does feel like a definitive version of the game. It's a shame that the only way to play it is via emulating it on PC.

The decompile is about halfway done. It may result in a PC port eventually.

This is highly sexual. Thanks for sharing.

Well, not the only way. RGH a 360 and you can play it.

XBLA (Project Bean) 100%

I cannot play anything else now

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

They decompiled perfect dark. Hopefully they can squeeze it some more performance out of it like they did with Mario 64.

I haven't played project bean yet but if they ever get a decomp done and have a functional windows build I'll be playing that so fast everyone's head will spin

XBLA would have easily been the definitive version had it seen an official release.

By the way, anyone who was a fan of Goldeneye/Perfect Dark should check out the Timesplitters series if you haven't already. It's basically a spiritual successor to them produced by the same key ex-Rare devs in the 2000s.
