Welcome to /c/birding, a community for people who like birds, birdwatching and birding in general! Feel free to post your birding photos or just photos of birds you found in general, but please follow the rules as outlined below.

  1. This should go without saying, but please be nice to one another. No petty insults, no bigotry, no harassment, hate speech, nothing of that sort! Depending on the severity, you'll either only get your comment removed and a warning or your comment will be removed and you will be banned from /c/birding.

  2. This is a community for posting content of birds, nothing else. Please keep the posts related to birding or birds in general.

  3. When posting photos or videos that you did not take, please always credit the original photographer! Link to the original post on social media as well, if there is one.

  4. Absolutely no AI-generated content is allowed! I know it has become quite difficult to tell whether or not something is AI-generated or not, but please make sure that whatever you post is not AI-generated. If it is, your post will be removed. If you continously post AI-generated content, you'll be banned from /c/birding (but it's obviously okay if you post AI-generated stuff once or twice without knowing you did so).

  5. Please provide rough information location, if possible. This is a more loosely-enforced rule, especially because it is sometimes not possible to provide a location. But if you post a photo you took yourself, please provide a rough location and date of the sighting.

MODERATORS

It seems like our birding community here has reached 1 thousand subscribers! I am very glad that there's this many birding enthusiasts here on Lemmy already :-)

I just want to take this time to welcome everyone to this community (do you still say "sub" even here on Lemmy?) and hope you enjoy your time here :-) Been seeing a lot of interesting bird posts here lately already.

Now, this is the first time I've ever moderated a community like this so I've no idea if there's anything that's missing. If you have any suggestions, feel free to tell me!

First, thanks for taking on the task of starting this community! I'm enjoying it so far and have posted a few birds myself.

I've been a mod of a few subreddits, both small and large. I don't think you need a whole lot at this stage but it might be worth putting in place some rudimentary rules so that, if you need to remove posts or comments, you can point to a rule when you do so. These can be pretty simple and obvious like:

  1. Be nice! Don't be rude to others or your comments will be removed and you may be banned.
  2. All posts must be related to birds.
  3. If you are posting someone else's content, provide attribution.

Another thing that could be useful is a bot that cna label posts with the bird's species when they are identified. I'm not sure if there are good bots that could just be dropped in place, but it might be worth looking at what is used in /r/birding.

+1 for rule no. 3

Not only is it nice to know who took the original shots, but it's also very neat to see OC being posted!

Congratulations! I just found your sub/com(?) from c/All through this post. I have recently started a new sub that has some overlap to this one, https://lemmy.world/c/digitalbioacoustics, it is on animal communication and the use of technology to detect and decode it.

Congratulations on your milestone, I'm looking forward to seeing it continue to grow!

Hey birdie, are you still active on lemmy? Or do we need a new moderator?

Sorta kinda. I usually pop in to check on reports every now and then but I haven't really seen all that many yet.
