How's everyone doing without reddit?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not bad at all - for me, this is just as good as reddit, and there are already quite a few people here.

I keep opening Sync by accident.

Frankly, I haven’t missed it. The Lemmy keeps me busy (you all almost woke up to 10,000 Tuesday SOTD posts this morning, good thing I caught that bug at midnight last night), and I have the Mastodon. Everything else on Reddit I was doing was just random mindless scrolling.

How does Mastodon interact with lemmy? Still a little confused on that front.

So Lemmy and Mastodon interact with each other the same way they interact between their own instances: the ActivityPub protocol. Lemmy is geared towards Reddit-style usage and Mastodon is more similar to Twitter but ultimately both of them have users/posts/replies. Similarly, Pixelfed focuses on images more like Instagram and Peertube is more Youtube like. They all still use the same underlying mechanism, just providing a different view onto the users/posts/replies.

Gotcha, thanks!

This comment was super helpful. Thank you!

I'm alright. I'm Joined on a bunch of subs, but only visit a handful regularly throughout the day. It'll be good to branch out from reddit. I spend too much time mindlessly scrolling there.

Same. I keep opening Sync by accident. Hopefully this place (lemmy in general) gets more popular, this generating more content.

Moderating the sub I'm a moderator at have been a breeze the last couple of days :P

Fine, honestly. There are other sites I miss more, and that disappeared for stupider reasons. Thinking of looking into Pixelfed, even though I was ever a user of instagram.

i dont understand any of this lemmy stuff, but that needs to be deleted

Thanks for calling this to my attention.

How does that work? Like I've spotted there are DE and SE posts which I guess means mini subs for them, or something.

I'm glad you guys are doing this as my tech knowledge is way too low

The server rules (which I based on the subreddit rules) say that people are welcome to make any communities that are related to traditional wet shaving. So people are welcome to make communities for DEs or SRs or House of Mammoth or whatever, but I plan on keeping !WetShaving as the main sub, basically the same as it is on Reddit.

Lemmy’s version of the curated shave forum?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

So I've been posting my SOTD photo to the wetshaving.social Mastodon instance, and linking just the photo from there to my SOTD post on Lemmy. Here's today's post for reference. I also have an imgur link in the post for comparison. Is anyone having issues with accessing it from the app or the site? Is there a better (federated) way to link these posts?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Anyone using jerboa? I'm liking the interface but it doesn't seem to consistently pull through messages and replies to comments.

[–] bmac92 2 points 1 year ago

My biggest peeve with be app is that clicking on a comment reply doesn't take you to the comment. I think just using the mobile website is currently better.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Using it sometimes, for some things you need to use a browser. Though there have been 2 updates since I 'm here, so I'm counting on it improving fast.

[–] peroleu 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I use it, but I think the mobile site is better. Any alternative apps yet?

[–] bmac92 2 points 1 year ago

There's another app on f-droid, but it hasn't been updated in 9 months. It's called Lemur.

I’m seeing posts from Lemmy show up on Mastodon. Does this mean there’s a way to link these accounts so that, for example, my post in the SotD thread shows up as a post on Mastodon?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Exactly. Lemmy and Mastodon all operate under the activitypub protocol, so they can see each other’s content, but display it in different ways.

On Mastodon, check out @[email protected]. You’ll see it’s a Mastodon feed of all the posts to that Lemmy community. You can also check out a specific user, so @[email protected] will be all your Lemmy posts.

The thing is that they don’t play nice together. So yesterday I tried tagging one of the Lemmy communities’ Mastodon account in a Mastodon post, and it created a post on Lemmy that was the text of my Mastodon post.

So not perfect, but it is another way to watch what’s going on.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks for the info! I’m probably going to keep them separate for now. Going to start looking into other Lemmy communities later this week.

I was never a big fan of Twitter's layout, but it is cool to this crossover.
