At this point 75% of my calls are spam. I get the occasional text spam but it’s much lower. The number one feature I want Apple to announce is features to better handle spam.

Any else in the same boat?

Absolutely. I get spam calls daily, sometimes multiple times per day. If I pick one up, I'll usually get a flood of like 6 the next day. Lately I've been getting spam calls who leave a 6 second voicemail of static, and I've started getting spam texts as well.

I eagerly await the FCC cracking down on spam calls because this is ridiculous

Call Blocking & Identification: Turn on Silence Junk Callers (available with certain carriers) to silence calls identified by your carrier as potential spam or fraud.

Such a bummer my carrier doesn’t support this.

You can still silence unknown callers (Settings -> Phone -> Silence Unknown Caller). They will ring for the person on the ither end but be muted and from your perspective go right to hour call log/voicemail. And if they speak onto your voicemail starting with iOS 17 in fall you can read along what they say and pickup if it’s something you need to interact with.

Wait, you can pick up a call that is in voicemail? I had idea.

That is an exciting feature for 17, do you have a link to a demo?

I think it’s more on the carriers. I used to get a lot more but it’s dropped off a lot recently.

I’m kinda surprised I don’t receive any, is it maybe a USA only problem?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yes this is mainly a US problem. Buy not exclusively. I assume it’s the main market for such calls due to the size and low language barrier.

In China you get also all kind of spam callers. The Banks asking if you need a credit, an agent calls if you want to buy a house, a car or whatever. Before the car insurance runs out, insurance companies keep calling you... Really annoying

As someone that uses both a Pixel and an iPhone, google really does an amazing job of this. Junk calls are blocked, suspicious calls are screened where they are prompted to explain themselves and you can read their answer and have google prompt them for more details or just tell them to get lost. Sounds like Apple is starting to add some of the things Pixel does starting in ios 17 so it should get better.

It might not be a device/iOS issue? Have had the same number for about 20 years through Cingular/AT&T and was getting calls on a regular basis, particularly bad leading up to and during covid era (3-4 per day). Ported same number to tmobile earlier this year and spam calls have dropped to maybe one every other week - at most. My take then is that depending on your carrier screening or not pairing with carriers initiating the spam calls.

Block unknown callers on iOS. iOS 17 testing of visual voicemail looks promising in early stages

When I first switched to an iPhone the spam calls were crazy. I downloaded spam filter apps for my carrier and it’s helped so much it seems. I have a line on AT&T Prepaid and one on Verizon. Downloaded AT&T Active Armor for my AT&T line and the spam calls have dropped significantly. Not sure if that is why or maybe a coincidence.

I have Robokiller and still get some. But of late it seems like more get flagged questionable and try to ring thru twice

[–] million 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah I am tempted to try out a third party call blocker but hesitant due to privacy concerns

I only did cause it was getting absolutely ridiculous without one😔
