Motorola Defy vs Garmin InReach (www.xda-developers.com)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by Gamera8ID to c/ultralight

I have an InReach Mini 2 but am thinking about picking up a Motorola Defy to try as an alternative.

I'm mostly out day-hiking, but usually in remote areas which are sparsely-populated where cell signal is inconsistent. Only a few times a year am I lucky enough to find time for multiple-day hikes.

Garmin is reliable, and I'm in their ecosystem with my watch, too.

But I'm a sucker for new tech, and the Defy looks interesting.

Anyone have any thoughts either way?

less weight and cheaper monthly costs but you'll have less connectivity/service to satellites and less battery life

Have you found any articles comparing the two IRL, rather than just by specs? I've struck out looking for YouTube videos. I expect that's due to the Defy being new.

I wouldn't hold out hope for long-term support from Motorola. They're pretty awful about supporting their devices. That's just my take though.

No plans to go back :)

I notice you're really putting in the work getting this community started. Thanks for that!

Good to hear, I am weaning myself off. Thanks, I'm trying! There's something exciting about starting fresh in a new frontier :)

Can you edit your post to add a little more context in terms of how you use your inreach, what sort of trips you go on, what potentially appeals to you about the defy, etc? The post is so brief that at first I thought it was spam.

Done. (TBH I really don’t have much to say. I just saw the news about the Defy being released for the US and figured it might help you to have someone else post something. I thought it might help break the ice.)

Appreciate it. It might :)
