I'd like to some day build a pergola or a gazebo but I have pretty much no experience. Where should I start, or resources to look into? I've heard that doing is the best way to learn but with structural builds I'm a little anxious as a complete beginner. Thanks!

Scale is your friend. Make a small one. Practice on a few made for a bird.

Then when you’re ready, up the scale. Naturally there will be new challenges, but you’ll be prepped from the models you made.

I recommend a book for learning this type of thing. Otherwise it's best to work with and learn from someone with experience.

I would recommend a pergola. Much easier to build than a gazebo.
