I think that was Villeneuve. Herbert never mentioned those spider-man critters. He did insinuate that the Axolotl tanks used to clone gholas (spoiler) are actually captive women used as breeding vessels by Bene Tleilax.

Chair dogs were featured quite a few times with Odrade and others in the last 2 Dune books by Frank. It wasn't a major plot element, but it was a reoccurring scene prop.
