Back in the dial-up days of the mid-'90s, a college classmate of mine had a DOS PC with a problem that PCs can't have anymore:
- After boot, the modem would not work until he moved the mouse.
- However, once he used the modem, moving the mouse would cause the modem to disconnect.
The cause? The modem and mouse were using the same IRQ, meaning that their communication with the CPU was getting muddled together.
The solution? Open the case and flip a physical switch on the modem card, causing it to use a different IRQ from the mouse port.
