This will be my first Austrian GP, what’s the track like and aside from Verstappen dominating what’s to expect?

It's a rather short track, or what is called a "Mickey mouse track". Lots of slow corners so plenty of possibilities for overtaking. Not heavy on the engine.
In theory, Red Bull should struggle a bit more than normal since their biggest strength is on long straights and fast corners, but they (especially Max) are so far ahead that I expect Max to win unless something technical happens, or an extremely unfortunate safety car or something like that.
But that doesn't matter. There's a really tight midfield behind that, I haven't seen a dull race yet this season, just don't focus on the leader when he is 10 seconds ahead.
We’re on the same page regarding Max’s dominance. I don’t think it’s a problem, in fact I look at it as we’re lucky to watch him. Especially after Monaco quali. That being said I only started watching late last year so everything is still exciting.
Don't forget that it is a sprint-weekend too. Not aRBR's strongest weekends usually.
Yeah they (especially Perez) need that free practice time to dial in the car. Others are closer to peak pace on day one.
But even RB's slower pace is still pretty much front of the field.
There's rain expected, that should make things easier for RB.
I went to this race in 2018, 2019 and 2022. If I didn't just buy a house with my girlfriend I would have gone again.
Everything around the track is so nicely streamlined. Austria is also amazing in summer. Would recommend it to anyone who wants to visit a track.
This is a track I never bothered to learn on the F1 games. Maybe I’ll be inspired after this Sunday race!
It’s worth it IMO - one of the easiest tracks. Tricky turn for me is always getting traction out of T3 (the first hair pin, not sure id it counts as T2 or T3 because of that left kink after T1). But I think the whole track flows pretty nicely.
That turn is one of the turns that I struggle with the most (over all F1 tracks) in the games. Somehow I always lose time there to the AI, and if I try to go faster I spin. The track is otherwise quite straightforward, so I guess it's not too bad to have one challenging corner
I've improved a lot with cornering on the sim so I think it's time for another go! See my comment above about different sim communities on Lemmy
Its quite fun to run on in even a simple sim rig, just wheel and pedals, which is what I have. I managed a 1.29.116 in a Lotus Exos 125, which I think these days would be a Formula 3 car.
Edit: I play Assetto Corsa
I've raced this a lot! It's a good time. I think the RSS formula 3 is a free download if you want a more modern feeling car!
I’ll give it a shot, thanks!
You playing on PC?
Edit: I'm so going for this lap time tonight haha!
Yep, from Steam
Edit: Good luck mate! If you beat that, I’m getting in the RSS F3 mentioned above.
I have a standard sim atm. Sounds like I should dive back into the Red Bull Ring. To be fair I have improved so much in cornering lately I should give it another go. BTW be sure to check out [email protected] and [email protected] we need to pump the sim racing communities here!
I've linked simracing in the sidebar.
I managed a 1.18.357, so I'm guessing somewhere, we are not doing the same thing. Lotus Exos 125, Red Bull Ring, 20C, 0 wind, 20L of fuel.
There is no way you put in 1.18 in this thing. Screenshots or it didn’t happen lol! I upped mine to 1.26, check it: https://imgur.com/a/JvKbboC

Wasn't this the track which Aston Martin mentioned at the start of the season when asked which track suited the car best?
Looking forward to this. Short track with a few corners that drivers can get their elbows out (looking at you Lando and George).
Was this the track where Carlos' engine blew when they were looking at a 1-2 last year?
Who's going to end up in the gravel? Perez?
The red bulls will most likely be in the distance but should be fun.
Hoping to see some racing through the orange flairs this weekend.
I stopped watching this year. They stopped all streaming besides their own here and that service is three times as expensive. I would have pirated but the f1 sub also banned me because I didn't very my email. So all contact to the sport got cut. It's just been motogp for me this year. Will get to see it live as well. :D
