It's well known on r/cars that Subaru's engines aren't the most reliable around.

Yes and no, it's usually operator error and this one isn't abused or extensively modified. The NA ones have headgaskets and the turbo ones either blow ring lands from improper shifts or something else when too many bolt ons are added without a proper tune. Either way we were a bit surprised but at least we get the chance to learn how to pull the motor.

I'd say the Ford (I have a Focus ST) but the lotus would probably have it beat.

The RS still has a few more years of warranty and the Lotus is the most reliable car I've ever owned. The WRX does not currently have an engine in it though...
