The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is proposing rules that could benefit patent trolls, increase patent litigation costs, and harm the open-source software community. The Linux Foundation, along with other organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Unified Patents, is urging people to take action and submit comments to the USPTO expressing their support for a fair and open system that allows challenges to invalid patents. The proposed rules could favor non-practicing entities (NPEs) and hinder the ability of organizations like Unified Patents to challenge bad patents. The consequences could be costly for businesses and hinder innovation. The deadline for comments is June 20, 2023.

All software patents should be invalid.

Exactly, the patent system is so outdated and software as a whole should not be possible to patent.

The current state of copyright and software patents just infuriate me to no end. It’s actively stifling innovation and competition, all in the name of money…

They've always gotta enable the big companies to be able to do whatever they want after all

You know what, maybe patents make sense in an ideal world where people rip off the innovator. But right now all we see is big corporations ripping off the little guy, be it ever greening patent tactics and monopolies like the kind insulin has been subject to or patent trolls stifling innovation. All patents seem to have accomplished like copyright strikes on YouTube are allow bullies to thrive.
