AE defines its typical residential user within city limits as using 860 kilowatt-hours of power each month

I use 1100 and live alone, who is this typical user they think exists? Are they averaging the empty homes owned by corporate interests using no power or water?

Hu? What's happening over there? I've used 3400 kWh in the last year, with 2 people. That's like 280 a month. German, btw.

It varies wildly based on what kind of heating you're using and also how you heat your water. As well as many other things. It can't really be averaged like this, they simply did a bad statistics job, possibly on purpose

Yeah, I get that. But are the differences that immense? 3400 is on the upper end for 2 people in Germany afaik. The guys talking about 13000 kWh in a year.

It's likely he has poor insulation, runs his AC very cold, has incandescent light bulbs he leaves on all day, and has older appliances that are energy hogs (HVAC, fridge, etc). He's on the very high end of per capita usage in Austin, too

I have decent insulation on a 25 year old house. Was just redone about 5 years ago. I do tend to run my a/c under 80, correct in that one. My usage is mostly computers I would bet. I ended up shutting down the homelab this month to see the impact, but my NAS is likely the real bad guy for power.

Yeah, that computer equipment puts you well outside the average household's electricity use

It definitely can be averaged like this, they just average out the residential bills of all their customers. Yes there's variability, and that's why you would take an average

I have a household of 3 in a single family house and our highest electricity usage over the past 12 months was our August/September billing cycle (because the AC was running 24/7) which was 888 kWh. In the wintertime we average under 300 kWh. You have something seriously wrong or are making poor energy choices if you're using that much electricity for one person

We already have higher rates and unknown fees at home...

TLDR:

the impact will be about $1.33 per month. AE defines its typical residential user within city limits as using 860 kilowatt-hours of power each month.
