Should they have allied with the countries currently invading one of their neighbors?
Most definitely not.
This isn't one of those situations where there's a good guy and a bad guy.
Russia is messed up. No one should be defending the invasion.
The US will only help if their economic interests align. That includes helping with conditions that are predatory.
Nobody can really afford to let Ukraine be coopted like Russia is trying. Unless they're russian allies/sycophants. In which case, carry on, I guess.
Then the Europeans should post their fair share if they want to matter in defense. This is all bluster until the continent shuts up and puts up the money.
