Since many of us are trying to avoid giving reddit any traffic, this space can be used to discuss Apollo, our dreams of seeing it join the Fediverse, and to give our appreciation to @[email protected] for his incredible work.
Did exactly the same thing last week. The initial discomfort and disorientation lasted for about 48 hours. Spent some quality time understanding the whole fediverse concept, this week feel like I am “old hand” already. While at it , explore the rest of decentralized services around: Matrix, Mastodon, PeerTube, Pixelfed, Revolt, etc.
Bottom line: you’ll be fine. Once you get a hang of it, fediverse is far, far better than any Reddit, Facebook, Twitter and the rest.
What is Matrix and Revolt, there seems to be a lot of noise online, so I couldn’t quite work out what the Fediverse versions are
Both is chat apps, Matrix is part of fediverse, but I think Revolt is centralized although it's an Open Source project

Matrix is a protocol, rather than an app. It's also not part of the "fediverse" per se, as the fediverse generally refers to the social media platforms over ActivityPub (Mastodon, Lemmy, Kbin, Pleroma, Pixelfed, and so on). It is a federated protocol, however.
The important thing about federated protocols is that it lets people use their own choice of client/app, and can talk to everyone else using the same protocol. So for Matrix, you get Element, Cinny, NeoChat, etc... and can talk to all the same people, unlike the way Discord or Facebook Messenger works, where you must use the same one.
Same concept for the ActivityPub protocol, you just pick your favourite platform such as Mastodon or Lemmy, and you can potentially interact with everyone else using the same protocol.
Unfortunately Revolt is just an open-source Discord clone, and doesn't federate.

Pro tip, I used to open reddit unconsciously, even after installing lemmy. After I noticed that I removed the reddit icon and replaced it with jerboa. Now I barely ever go to reddit best
Same here. I knew I would accidentally open it during the initial two day protest, so I removed my RiF widget and deleted the official app. I replaced RiF with Jerboa and started using that. I have only been back to Reddit a handful of times; it's great.
Yup. As far as I'm concerned, rif is Reddit, and when it's gone, so is Reddit. I deleted the app when Andrew announced it would be shutting down on the 30th, and I haven't looked back.
I haven’t deleted it yet. I want to support it until the end.
I'm still a little bit in shock. But also watching the shitstorm over at Reddit is easiest through Apollo. Still 7 more days.
