You should do more cooking.

Mashed potatoes do have other ingredients besides potatoes. Like butter, milk, nutmeg, other stuff depending on local customs...

Mashed patatoes made purely out of squashed potatoes are not something you would enjoy.

"Riced potatoes" are one example. Mashed (riced) to look like rice, sometimes with added herbs and spices. But potatoes mashed with a splash of whole cream/milk, some butter and salt is a wonderful experience if nothing else. Plain potatoes mashed with a fork only? I'll pass...

That's actually also the only reference to a pure potatoe variant of mashed potatoes I could find: Kartoffel-Reis or Kartoffel-Schnee (potatoe rice/ snow) in the german Wikipedia (no mentioning of something similar in the english version).

But they apparently require a special preparation to get their unique texture.

Also, I am german but have never heard of it before. Not that common I would say. And for sure nothing one would think of when hearing "mashed potatoes".

Plenty of people eat them like that all around the world. Never heard of anyone adding milk to potatoes.

Judging by a short internet search and the majority of comments in this thread, yours seems to be a somewhat exotic experience.

Just give mashed potatoes with some additional seasoning and moisture source a try someday. Might be worth it!

I am talking about my personal life. Most people I know just boil potatoes in salted water, and maybe mash them afterwards.

If you want to try something different get a mixer add some butter milk, maybe lil paprika on top. But if you enjoy it your way, you do you.

I have never seen a single recipe for mashed potatoes that did not call for milk, cream, or broth of some sort (not even Vegan recipes). Ever. Never seen a single cook from any country (in person or on TV/YouTube) make them without adding something like this. Along with seasoning of some sort. Bare minimum.

Yes it does. Plain potato vs mashed potatoe, with butter/cream/milk. It'll know.

Boil 'em, mash 'em, put 'em in a stew!

My mouth does, and that's the important part.

Remind me not to eat at your place...

What are you (not) doing to your mashed potatoes???

[–] AB7ORH7D 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mean when you chew your potatoes, they get mashed. So all I'm saying is that when you eat potatoes vs eat mashed potatoes, your stomach doesn't really know the difference now does it

[–] Donjuanme 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Masticating and mashing are different processes. Please tell me your aren't chewing your potatoes (insert next step) and calling them mashed?

[–] zeppo 2 points 1 year ago

It’s like the traditional way of making chicha… chew up potatoes, spit them in a bowl.

[–] Cruxifux 4 points 1 year ago

I swallow raw potatoes while, like a snake devouring a rabbit, so my stomach knows.

I sure hope not...

[–] ZcaT 3 points 1 year ago

Tbf, I don't like mashed potatoes so it doesn't even matter!

[–] WhoRoger 2 points 1 year ago

Stomachs are smarter than brains sometimes.

[–] MrNemobody 2 points 1 year ago

It does. Mashed potatoes give me gastritis.
