Welcome to the TTRPG/DND/D&D/Fantasy Map Makers Community!

We're thrilled to have you here! This community is all about the art and craft of creating TTRPG maps. Whether you're a seasoned cartographer or just beginning, this is the perfect place to delve into the world of map making. Here, we exchange knowledge, seek advice, explore techniques, and bring our imaginary worlds to life.

Our Main Focus: Map Making Discussions

Primarily, our community thrives on open discussions about all aspects of map-making. Topics can range from tools, techniques, and asset sharing to queries about scaling and more. This open forum is where we share knowledge, learn from one another, and celebrate the process of map creation.

Other Acceptable Posts Include:

Map Making Prompts: Feel free to post prompts that others can interpret through their unique artistic perspectives. Create maps inspired by these prompts and share your process!

User Requests: If you have a specific idea for a map but lack the skills to bring it to life, you can post your request here. Our talented community of artists may choose to fulfill them. Remember, this isn't a place for paid requests, and we reserve the right to revisit this policy if the number of requests becomes overwhelming.

Artist's 'Make a Request' Posts: Artists in our community can start a thread inviting others to make requests, which they can then attempt to fulfill. This keeps the requests contained and easy to follow. This section also doesn't cater to paid services, and the policy may change in the future.

Rules:

We're here to foster a collaborative environment where map makers can learn from each other and improve their skills. This community is about celebrating the process of map creation and exploring innovative ways to illustrate adventures. While sharing completed maps is not our primary goal, feel free to join [email protected] to showcase your completed creations.

So I'd like take some requests and draw some maps. The practice would be good for me and I've got a long weekend. I'm totally new here though, what's the best way of doing that? I thought I could make a request post here and post the finished maps on both? Is it preferred to post the image directly or host it on a different site and post the link to it? I'm not entirely sure how the instances work and wasn't sure about the etiquette.

Interesting. I like the idea. Posts about prompts, but not so much images themselves. Lemme think about it, but I like the idea. Even doing different things like everyone responding to prompt ideas. I wanted the battlemaps community mainly to be more images that you could scroll through, finding maps and inspiration, and posts about making maps for over here. Lemme think of a good way to word it, and I'll make a post tomorrow. Ideally itll be along the lines of posting 'Make your (free) requests here' (you can link to a patreon, but ideally this isnt the place for exchanging stuff for money) in the /c/MapMaking , and you can repost in the /c/BattleMaps just the image of the finished product (whatever is the best way to host it, as long as people get access to a map (not one thats made in a way where its not actually usable for actual play). So then /c/BattleMaps is still about scrolling through just map ideas, and /c/MapMaking can be for questions, tutorials, and request threads

Yeah, it seemed like battlemaps should be easier to scroll through with just maps there. I didn't want to clog it up with text posts.

I'm not a pro or anything, but I've been getting better with wonder and dungeon draft and a list of prompts would be fun to see how different people interpret it.

Sidebar has been updated to include allowing Prompts, User requests, and Artist's 'Make a Request' Posts

I totally agree. Sometimes a map doesn't need to be the prettiest looking thing aesthetically. Honestly pretty maps a lot of times aren't very functional. I personally try to focus on gameplay for my maps. They may not visually always look the best, but if you load them into a VTT with dynamic lighting and walls and such, the experience will really change. So the point is it's cool to see different artists approach. I'm a very functional map maker, where i suppose sometimes I get into very little details, but at the end of the day I know it's not a map your gonna hang from the wall or whatever. But another artist totally might make one that is that beautiful. And seeing those two interpretations would be cool
