If you want a system that is more narrative and less crunchy, you can give Lancer a shot. Core book has a free edition, which is linked. It's a little more generic mech than explicitly Battletech, but it has a similar feel.

I can't answer this, but I do have a question: Which RPG system have you looked at? Destiny (MW:D) or Time of War (ToW)?
A friend of mine and I were looking, and it appears ToW is 4th edition and MWD is 5th edition of the RPG. However, ToW is still supported -- a new print was just released by Catalyst last year, even though the original print was more than decade ago. MWD was released in 2019.
I'm running a Destiny game, and it's a lot of fun. But there's a lot of crunch missing that might be available in TOW.
Edit: I just saw the age of this (how did I miss it?) and your post in RPG. Yeah sounds like you'd like Destiny. Really unique system not too obsessed with crunch.
