Synology

This is a place for all topics regarding Synology hard- and software - especially (but not limited to) their NAS devices.

Just one thing: Let’s please be pleasant to each other and respect that people have different experience levels. Some are pros, some are noobs, yet everybody may have good ideas or interesting questions to ask and comments to make, and all of these shall be heard and appreciated. ❤️

And since we know from TV that all IT nerds 🤓 are h4xx0rs and wear hoodies all the time (if not even ski masks) in front of their computers, I chose an appropriate banner image (image credit).

I am a bit at a loss what to do next.

2 days ago I got some notifications that Synology could not reach my box. When home I began checking and in fact most things could not find the box. (though fascinatingly SMB could access the box - Lightroom was happily seeing its files on the NAS).

Then I used Synology assistant and found the box (with a new ip ..ugh). But even when I connected the box is not connecting to the internet. I can access it via WIFI on my LAN .. I see the router sees the box, but I cannot connect to the internet.

(I attempted restoring network settings from backup, I rebooted router and box .. no change)

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Is there any good guide how to re-set and set up network settings and external access ?

If I need to restore to factory settings what is the best way to get back up ad running after? and not lose my data?

How did you set up your remote access?

If it was simple port forwarding you might need to reconfigure it with the new ip.

Should be easy to set up.

I had Quick Connect enabled. The internet access issue is double sided. For example I cannot see my remote backup targets, I cannot log into my Synology account from the box. The box does not see the gateway.

I tried any network settings, but without fail when I switch to Remote Access in control panel I get an error "domain name can't be resolved" and am asked to set my DNS to 8.8.8.8 But even when (I think correctly) set the DNS to that location it does not help

I guess you are right - I have not set up anything new on the router after this got messed I could try to do that next.

UPDATE: found it. Fixed it.

I tried many things - but in the end I realised this is internet connection error - something was preventing the box to connect to WAN ... And so I googled and found this article from Synology.

https://kb.synology.com/en-id/DSM/tutorial/DSM_update_why_connection_failed

I went down the list and in the end it turned out that I had a manual DHCP set up. When I clicked that to automatic, the network settings were applied, and my connection reloaded to the ORIGINAL LAN IP address and all is online again!

I know I at some point was setting up LAN wide ad-blocking and abandoned it .. I wonder if I messed up the settings myself. Anyways - it's up again.
